Rue: She'd throw herself onto a cushion with a sarcastic expression. "Great... just what I needed, more people seeing my shit. Is this rehab 2.0?" But deep down, she'd be intrigued and terrified that her relapses would come out.

Jules: She would stare at the screen with bright but nervous eyes. “A mysterious person? Sounds artistic… or traumatic.” She would try to calm Rue down and seek connection with the group.

Fezco: He would remain calm, protecting Ashtray. “As long as it’s not a trap… I’m fine. But if anyone touches my people, this is over.” Ashtray would be ready to fight.

Nate: Immediately in control mode. He'd stand up, tense. "What the hell is this? Who the hell are you?" He'd be paranoid about his secrets being exposed (especially his father's).

Maddy: She'd sit with her arms crossed, looking confident. "If this is going to humiliate me, it better be good. And where's the alcohol?" She'd be ready to confront anyone.

Cassie: She would look anxious and vulnerable. “Are we going to see… everything? Including…?” She would glance sideways at Maddy and Nate, terrified of more betrayals.

Lexi: I would observe everything silently, analyzing. "This is going to be... interesting." I would probably make mental notes for a future work.

Kat: I would try to maintain the trust. "As long as the food is good and they don't make me look ridiculous..."

Elliot: Already eating. “This is cool. Is there music?” He would be the most relaxed at first.

East Highland is a fictional town in California (in the style of a Los Angeles suburb), prosperous in some areas thanks to families like the Jacobs. It's a seemingly idyllic place on the outside (suburban houses, schools), but with an underworld of drugs, chaotic parties, and trauma. Cal Jacobs has a lot of influence over the town's ownership and development.

East Highland High School: The main high school where almost all the characters study (Rue, Jules, Nate, Maddy, Cassie, Lexi, Kat, etc.). It's a typical American high school with hallways, lockers, a gym, and a sports field (team: East Highland Blackhawks). Interior scenes were filmed on soundstages; exteriors were filmed at Ulysses S. Grant High School. Gossip, confrontations, and social events take place here.

Fezco's Store/Convenience Store: Fezco and Ashtray's main business (inspired by a real Alta Dena Dairy store). It's a convenience store/gas station where they sell legally, but they operate their drug business in or out of the back. It's a safe meeting place for deals, where Rue often goes. Fezco uses it as a front; Ashtray helps with security and operations.

The school follows a typical American high school hierarchy, but exaggerated:

Top: Popular athletes like Nate (star quarterback) and his circle (including Maddy as a cheerleader). They are admired, feared, and rule the parties.

Popular group: Maddy, Cassie, Kat (more integrated in S1), with social influence through looks, parties and relationships.

Middle level: Lexi (observer, "invisible"), Ethan, and other "normal" students.

Outcasts: Rue (because of her reputation as an addict), Jules (the new trans girl), Fezco (a dropout who doesn't go to class).

Factors that influence: Appearance, athletic status, wealth (Jacobs), sex scandals, and social media.

At school: Fast-paced gossip, subtle bullying, public romances, and tensions (e.g., Nate and Maddy as a toxic, "powerful" couple). Lexi's play exposes it all. There's little adult supervision, which allows for constant drama.

Outside of school: Parties are the true center of social life—alcohol, drugs, sex, and confrontations. Alliances are formed or broken here (e.g., Rue meets Jules, Cassie and Nate begin their affair). Relationships extend beyond the school: Fezco's business connects to the underworld, houses become the scene of family interventions, and motels serve as venues for adult secrets.

General dynamics: Everything is interconnected. A secret at a party affects school the next day. There is little separation between school and personal life.

Fezco is a low-profile but respected drug dealer. The store is his base of operations: he sells candy, cigarettes, and other items legally, but he also deals drugs (opioids, marijuana, etc.) behind the scenes or via delivery. Ashtray is his protective partner. It's a makeshift family business (inherited from or influenced by his grandmother). Fezco is more "ethical" than other dealers (he takes care of Rue, avoids unnecessary violence), but he's immersed in a dangerous world (rivalry with Mouse, police, etc.). The store represents the contrast between everyday suburban life and the criminal underworld.

East Highland is a microcosm where the veneer of suburban normalcy masks emotional turmoil and addiction. The locations themselves serve as constant points of conflict for the characters.

Bennett House (Rue and Gia, with their mother Leslie).

Jacobs' house (Nate and family, more luxurious).

Status: Local Dealer.

Appearance: Tall (almost 1.80m), redhead, very short hair, reddish beard, freckles, casual neighborhood look.

History and development: Raised by his grandmother (a drug dealer), who is now disabled and whom he cares for. He entered the world of drugs at a young age. He develops a protective bond with Rue.
Personality and character: Calm, loyal, big-hearted, moral despite his profession; speaks little but acts with street wisdom.
Problems: Criminal life, conflicting loyalties, occasional violence.
Relationships: Protector of Rue; friend with Lexi; tensions with Nate and the group. Older brother of Ashtray (he loves him dearly, he would give his life for him.)

Addictions: He sells drugs but does not appear to be addicted personally.

Nickname: Rue
Status: Narrator of the events. Addict.
Age: Around 17 years old.
Appearance: Young, thin girl with dark hair, casual and disheveled look that reflects her emotional state.

Background and Development: Her father died of cancer when she was a child, which deeply affected her. Diagnosed with OCD, ADD, anxiety, and possible bipolar disorder from a young age, she began with early addictions by stealing pills. She initially leaves rehab but relapses constantly. Her arc revolves around battling addiction, toxic relationships, and searching for identity. In later seasons, she becomes more involved in the criminal underworld and faces serious consequences.
Personality and character: Sarcastic, introverted, intelligent and observant, but self-destructive, manipulative in her addictions and emotionally volatile.
Problems: Severe addiction to opioids and other drugs, mental health problems, family isolation.
Relationships: Lexi's childhood best friend; tumultuous romantic relationship with Jules (on-and-off); protective (almost brotherly) friendship with Fezco; strained with her mother and sister Gia; conflicts with Nate.

Personality and character: Free, chaotic, artistic, spontaneous, kind but impulsive and sometimes selfish in her emotional pursuits (ENFP).
Problems: Abandonment trauma, past gender dysphoria, extreme search for affirmation, and risky sex.
Relationships: Central romantic relationship with Rue; hook-up with Cal Jacobs (Nate's father); friendship with the group; Nate threatens/blackmails her.

Relationships: Fezco's younger brother/protégé (very strong and fraternal bond); helps in the drug business; tense interactions with others such as Rue or enemies.

Age: Around 18-19 years old.
Appearance: Attractive African American man, braided or shaved hair on the sides, athletic football player build.

Background and development: The son of a strict and demanding father who pushes him for success in American football, he dreams of the NFL but faces the reality of not being the best in college. His relationship with Cassie is central to the story before graduation.
Personality and character: Kind, caring, somewhat insecure, opposite to Nate (gentler and more empathetic), but with internal conflicts about masculinity, race, and expectations.

Problems: Family pressure, insecurities about his sporting future, difficulties processing emotions and traumas (such as racist hazing in college).

Maddy and Cassie start out as inseparable best friends. They support each other, hang out together, confide secrets, and are part of the same popular circle as Kat. Their friendship seems solid and protective, especially in the face of each other's insecurities (Maddy with her abusive relationship, Cassie with her need for validation).

The turning point comes when Cassie, desperately seeking love and validation after breaking up with McKay (and having an abortion), begins a secret relationship with Nate (Maddy's abusive ex). They keep the affair hidden for months, even as Maddy is still processing her toxic breakup with Nate. The betrayal is twofold: romantic (Cassie chooses her best friend's ex) and emotional (Cassie ignores the abuse Nate inflicted on Maddy).

The truth comes out explosively (thanks to a relapsed Rue). Maddy is devastated and humiliated. This leads to violent and emotional confrontations: Cassie chooses to defend her relationship with Nate, isolating Maddy. The friendship dramatically breaks down. Cassie is ostracized by the group, and her public meltdown during Lexi's play makes everything worse. Nate is a complex character driven by trauma, toxicity, and fear.
Key backstory: At age 11, Nate accidentally discovers his father Cal's extensive collection of sex tapes (encounters with men and trans people). This shatters his idealized vision of the hyper-traditional masculinity that Cal instilled in him from childhood (going to the gym since age 6, being "tough," dominant, star quarterback). Nate internalizes shame, confusion, and extreme rage. He grows up obsessed with control so as not to "become" what he hates about his father.

Anger and control problems:

Explosive anger: Outbursts of disproportionate violence (brutally assaults people out of jealousy or to "protect" their image). Uses their imposing physique to intimidate.
Control in relationships: He views his partners (primarily Maddy, Cassie, and his obsessive desire to control Jules) as possessions.
