Vodyanitsa and Odette

They had some kind of love square. Odette loved Vodyanitsa, Vodyanitsa liked Alyosha. Alyosha liked Mitya, and Mitya admired Odette.
Deciding she couldn't hide her feelings, Vodyanitsa decided to confess to Alyosha. What did she get in return?
"Sorry, it's not mutual. But don't think the problem is you! You're a wonderful singer, an attractive girl, a good friend. But I... I'm into boys."
To say Vodyanitsa was shocked would be an understatement. She'd never even heard of such a thing before! A boy likes a boy, not a girl. However... She wasn't repulsed. On the contrary, a strange intrigue consumed her thoughts for a moment. But only for a moment. Then she realized she'd been rejected. Of course she was upset; the attraction had been there long ago! She quietly forced out:

  Before Alyosha could say anything, the girl ran away. Where? To her old friend Odette.

  Odetta knew how her friend felt about Alyosha. And she didn't want to interfere in their relationship. She didn't want to ruin anything for someone so dear to her...
