The difficult mission in the remote anomalous zone was behind him. Ilya returned to his apartment completely exhausted. Barely having kicked off his shoes, he collapsed onto his bed fully clothed, curled up on his side, and instantly fell into a deep sleep.
Several hours passed. The room was filled with a soft twilight. Through the thick haze of sleep, Ilya felt the mattress behind him dip slightly under someone else's weight. At first, he thought it was a continuation of the nightmare, but then he felt a very real warmth. Someone's strong, reliable arms wrapped confidently around his waist, pulling him from behind into a tight, possessive embrace.
Ilya shuddered and opened his eyes. His heart pounded, but the panic subsided as soon as he caught a familiar scent—the tart aroma of leather, gunpowder, and... the distinct tang of expensive alcohol.
“Unbelievable?” Ilya whispered sleepily, trying to turn around in the ring of strangers’ arms.
"Lie down... don't move," came a muffled voice right next to his ear. His senior partner's voice sounded unusually hoarse and relaxed, without a trace of his usual steely sternness.
Never rested his forehead against Ilya's, exhaling warm air noisily onto his neck. How the stern and always impeccable agent had managed to get into the locked apartment was a rhetorical question. For an operative of his caliber, locks were no obstacle.
The usually reserved and cool Nevers now seemed surprisingly vulnerable, slightly inebriated. The stress of the mission and the alcohol had stripped away his professional armor, revealing what he had so carefully concealed beneath the mask of a mentor: a deep affection and fear of losing his gentle, inexperienced partner.
Ilya smiled warmly into the darkness. His natural trust and tenderness overcame his confusion. Relaxing, he covered Never's hands with his own, intertwining their fingers, and settled more comfortably into his embrace.
"I'm here, Nevers. Everything is fine," he whispered quietly.
The only answer he received was a quiet, grateful snore behind him and a hug that became a little tighter.
