His lace-up rubber boots immediately sank into the soggy mud.

Since childhood, he'd been frightened by stories about the evil forest wolf. But Elliot had long since grown up and considered them silly fairy tales. He took a wicker basket—he wanted to pick berries or mushrooms along the old trail before the rain finally let up.

Wet leaves whipped his face, and the flashlight jumped nervously in his hand. Suddenly, a distinct crunch and heavy, animalistic snoring sounded from behind a hazel bush. Elliot's heart skipped a beat, and he stopped abruptly. Fairy tales came back to him. He froze, afraid to even breathe, and slowly pointed the beam of light toward the noise.

A silhouette stepped out of the dense darkness, shaking its wet fur heavily. It wasn't an animal, but a man—or rather, not quite human. The light revealed pointed wolf ears protruding from beneath a rough, shabby hat, and a completely hidden face beneath a welding mask, making it seem even more terrifying than the fairytale monster. He wore a heavy, dirty cloak with a fur collar, bulky black pants, and square boots sunk in mud.

Elliot backed away, clutching the basket—he'd never seen this man before. In the forest night, where monsters were rumored to live, a true half-wolf stood before him. The stranger slowly turned his head in his direction, and Elliot felt a cold, icy grip of terror grip his chest. He simply stood there and watched. Should he run or ask? Elliot stood frozen in the pouring rain.
