Fortunately, they were reasonably clever and built in deserts or barren lands, while the use of highly fertile lands was prohibited for non-agricultural purposes, which displeased several nobles, but because it was royal policy, they had to comply reluctantly.
There are black and white cameras, but not dynamite; there are saltpeter-based explosives, but they are not powerful enough to penetrate mountains without becoming a money pit.

The medieval world is similar to the real world, except the monarchy made better decisions and wasn't overthrown by the people... even so, they still hold most of the political power, although some politicians who rose to power thanks to the people are still a minority.
