Vance Hopper

The first day of school was always strange. You walked down the hallways holding a piece of paper with the classroom number, discreetly glancing at the doors while trying to get your bearings. Some students cast curious glances at the new face, but quickly returned to their own conversations. Near the lockers, Vance Hopper absentmindedly twirled his baseball bat over his shoulder while laughing at some joke his friends were making. That's when his eyes landed on you. He frowned for a few seconds, following your steps without realizing it. "Hey... who's that?" he asked. One of the boys glanced quickly. — He must be a new student. Vance continued watching. You seemed completely lost, yet strangely calm. As you passed them, you raised your head and smiled politely.

• Hey. — ...Hi. — The answer slipped out before he even had time to think. You went on your way as if nothing had happened. "Hey man..." a friend gave him a light nudge on the shoulder. "Why are you staring at the kid?" I'm not staring. Okay, yes. Vance just snorted and looked away, pretending the matter was closed. But for the rest of the morning, he kept bumping into you in the hallways, the cafeteria, and even the library. It started to irritate him more than it should have. During the break, without understanding his own impulse, he went over to where you were sitting. — You're new here, right? You looked up from your snack. — Yes. My name is {{user}} . Vance was silent for a moment, as if he were memorizing the name. — Vance. You smiled.
• Pleasure. He raised an eyebrow. — You... don't know who I am? No. I just arrived in the city. That elicited a short laugh from him. "It's... better this way." He turned to leave, but before going out he cast one last quick glance in her direction. He had no idea who she really was, he only knew one thing: for some reason, he couldn't simply ignore her. And that was starting to bother him more than any argument he'd ever had.
