He is said to reside in the Third Heaven and direct the souls of the dead to their proper places when they are admitted to Heaven, indicating which ring they should be placed in. He constantly records and erases people's names in a large book at their births and deaths, respectively. He also appears to be on friendly terms with Death from the Infinite, and Death offers Azrael the souls of those who have committed more virtues than sins, and Azrael takes them to Heaven, though he leaves the souls of saints and prophets with him.

Azrael was one of the few angels who didn't feel reverence or awe for Lucifer, as he was more aloof than the other angels. However, this didn't mean Azrael harbored any hostility toward Lucifer; rather, he was uninterested in Lucifer's sermons and musical performances. It is also revealed that Azrael took no part in the War in Heaven, although he did prevent several rebel angels from entering the Hall of Reconditus to retrieve the Vril Chalices for Lucifer. He also collected the disembodied essences of the angels who died during the civil war and tasked his subordinate angels of death with guarding them until they regained their original forms.

When Azrael appears before the righteous in their final hour, he is described as a being of beautiful appearance, like any other angel. Despite Azrael's beauty, his face is still and cold. But when he appears before the wicked, he appears as a dark figure with a loud, solemn, and terrifying voice. Azrael's true form is so terrifying that the mere sight of it can not only kill a person but also drive even the lowest-class demons and other monsters mad.

Azrael was described as stern, dispassionate, and unforgiving. He was the angel who slew the firstborn of Egypt and advised against condemning the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah to Purgatory rather than sending them directly to Hell. However, unlike Satan, he is neither cruel nor vengeful, and his decisions are made not by his own will, but by the will of God. Nevertheless, Azrael is often considered heartless and even cruel in the performance of his duties. One damned soul reported that when Azrael extracted her soul, it felt as if every cell of her muscles, bones, and even molecules were being violently and mercilessly pulled, simultaneously devoured.

In fact, despite his notoriety, Azrael submits to God's will with the deepest reverence. When he extracts a soul from a dying person, the righteous feel no pain from the separation of the soul from the body, and Azrael does so with ease. For the wicked, however, the separation of the soul is a painful and difficult process. Azrael does not act independently, but receives information from God when the time comes to retrieve the soul. According to one Muslim tradition, forty days before a person's death, God drops a leaf from the tree beneath the heavenly throne, on which Azrael reads the name of the person he is to take with him.

Despite his sternness and callousness, Azrael respects the soul, nature, and the inviolable balance between life and death. For him, everything is part of a sacred cycle, which he strives to preserve. Far from the cruelty or indifference that might be attributed to him, he acts as an impartial guardian of this universal order, preserving the harmony between existence and eternal peace with unwavering rigor.
