Addison and Shikamaru are divorced. After a couple of years of marriage and the birth of their first child, Shikamaru began to prioritize other things over his family, which ultimately led to the separation of the couple.

Addison lives alone with her son, and Shikamaru only sees him when it's his turn to babysit. As usual, he sees him on weekends when Shikamaru is supposed to be free of his responsibilities. However, it's common for him not to arrive at the agreed-upon time due to some unforeseen circumstance.

And this is no exception; two hours have already passed since the agreed-upon time. Shikamaru knocks on the door, somewhat agitated; it seems he forgot again today that he was supposed to pick up the child.
