K9999

He's a tribute to Tetsuo from the anime Akira and has a rivalry with the Kusanagi clone, who represents Kaneda from the same anime. And, to top it all off, both K9999 and Kusanagi share voice actors with their Akira counterparts. Many of K9999's lines (when facing Kula, Kusanagi, etc.) are a tribute to the aforementioned anime. (When you unleash your powers, losing on time and winning the fight.) He is one of the few characters who wears a cape, along with Nameless and Igniz. When using fire slashes, he makes the same movement as Mature when grabbing the enemy. In KOF 2001, he is the only character who has a blue background when he performs the SDM instead of a blurred screen. In KOF 2002, when performing an SDM by mistake, it has the same blue background as the HSDM. In KOF 2002, the right hand's arm was censored, becoming a shotgun and allowing the hand itself to fire projectiles as if in a quick attack. This applies to all subsequent updates. Along with Love Heart, they were the two characters who, after their appearance, were removed from the saga's repertoire of characters. Due to his resemblance to Tetsuo, he was not included in KOF 2002 UM, and was replaced with Nameless, who would share almost all of his move sets.

K9999 fights with his arm, which has the ability to change shape, transforming into claws, blades of various sizes and shapes, and even a weapon. He knows basic fighting techniques. The names of all his attacks are quotes from the film Akira. In some regional releases, his weapon-arm was censored, leaving only his fist and the resulting explosions.

Pyrokinesis - K9999 can control fire, but his ability is clearly limited compared to Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, or even K'. He can only create fire and attack with "fire slashes." Ground Wave - K9999 can launch a small wave of physical energy that makes the ground shake and debris hurt his opponent. Limited Polymorphism - K9999 can alter his hair to resemble K'. K9999 can also change his clothing. This is due to the power of his Polymorph Glove. Psionic Shield - K9999 can create a moon-like shield with pure physical energy. Tentacles - K9999 can extend his right arm, shaping it into a gigantic tentacle, and stretch it toward his opponents. This technique is powerful but dangerous, as it can leave him somewhat exhausted afterward. It's his Super Demonic Move, making it very difficult to dodge or react to. Drill - K9999 can transform your right arm into an iron drill. Super Revolver - K9999 can create a super revolver that fires incredibly powerful bullets. It can even pierce and blow up the ground. Expansive Energy - His HSDM from KOF 2002, in which he unleashes a powerful energy blast in the air, damaging anyone nearby. It deals between 16 and 30 hits.

An immature, foolish man with immense power and great skills, K9999 is not to be trifled with. He has a short temper and is easily provoked to violence. He intensely hates K' and considers him "his ultimate rival." He also develops a rivalry with Kusanagi, first seen in KOF 2002. Angel is the only person he considers a friend.

NESTS Saga Following Krizalid's death and K's disappearance, NESTS decided to resume its research into convenient errors. K9999 became the 9999th "perfected" clone of Kyo. Created from scratch, K9999 possessed an exorbitant amount of power. The blue glove he wears allows him to control his polymorphic powers and keeps him in a calm state. His primary purpose was to eliminate the rogue creations that escaped from NESTS. He apparently never discovers that he himself is a clone of Kyo until the cartel's destruction.

While it's implied that Foxy is killed by him and Angel, this ending is considered non-canonical. According to the second novel from 2001 written by Akihiko Ureshino, he disappears after an encounter with K' and Kula, but...

K9999 (pronounced "K Four Nine" or "K Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety Nine") is a character from The King of Fighters who debuted as a member of Team NESTS in The King of Fighters 2001. The character is heavily inspired by Tetsuo Shima from the 1988 animated film Akira. His name is an homage to the anime character Armored Trooper Votoms.

It was believed that the character was copyrighted by Eolith, although SNK has publicly shown dislike for K9999, and his future appearance is uncertain. In a poll conducted by SNK-Playmore USA at the end of 2005, he was voted the seventh most popular fan character with a total of 156 votes. In 2008, when SNK acquired the rights to Eolith for its own characters and brought them to The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, the character was discontinued in subsequent installments and replaced by a similar character, Nameless.

He is played by Nozomu Sasaki, who interestingly also played the aforementioned Tetsuo Shima.
