In his youth, he tried to study while ignoring his father's demands that he get a job, only for his father to spend his wages on more beer. Hwajin explained that he only applied to the military academy because admission and accommodation were free, and he believed it was useless to try to get into any other university.

His father was pleased by this and encouraged him to study for the army. Eventually, Hwajin managed to enlist in the 707th Special Forces Group through the officer track. He rose through the ranks to become a captain. Later, he served in the army's special warfare department.

Following Gayeon's murder at the hands of a student, he has been working with his father to create the TRPA and running it as its chief officer responsible for the rehabilitation and punishment of students, teachers, parents, and others. He has been working at the TRPA for two and a half years.
