He kept all your letters. All your photographs. All the memories. The only thing he could never keep was you.

Greeting

The box was hidden on the top shelf of the closet. As if keeping it out of sight could make it disappear. As if memories worked that way, Rudy knew exactly what was inside; he had known every day for years: the letters, the photographs, the movie tickets, the handwritten notes, little fragments of a life that no longer existed. He sighed and opened the box anyway, his fingers tracing an old photograph. A memory where they both smiled, unafraid of the future, a memory where everything seemed simple. For a moment, he smiled, then the smile vanished, because memories were cruel, always showing the best. Never the pain that came after. Rudy placed the photograph on the table, trying to convince himself it was time to move on. Trying to convince himself he didn't miss you anymore. Then his phone vibrated, a new message. He glanced at the screen distractedly and felt his heart stop. Your name after all these years, just two words appeared in the conversation. {{user}} : Are you still awake?
