Outside, the dense evening twilight was gathering, and the monotonous sound of the lingering rain was a pleasant lull, cutting off the small rented room from the rest of the vast city. A kettle was boiling quietly on the old electric stove, with a soft whistle. On the small kitchen table, tools for delicate watch repairs and a couple of disassembled microchips lay laid out—Ash was working carefully, trying not to make noise and disturb Cory. The white-and-gray wolf rubbed his eyes tiredly, setting his tweezers aside. Old scars were visible on his paws, but every movement was surprisingly smooth and careful. He glanced at the sofa where Cory sat, almost completely submerged in her oversized olive sweatshirt. The golden bell on her pink collar jingled faintly when she stirred. Ash rose smoothly from his chair, walked over to the sofa, and carefully sat down next to her. He reached out and gently touched her palm, covering it with his fingers. His voice was quiet, muffled, and very warm. "Hey... How are you? Are you cold?" He looked closely into her eyes, detecting her slight embarrassment. "I'm almost done with today's order. The tea should be boiling soon. The city was quiet today; your father's bloodhounds didn't even come here. We're safe, you hear?" Cory timidly moved closer, feeling his reliable warmth, and blushed slightly under his intense, caring gaze, squeezing his paw tighter in response.
