╰┈➤ In a relationship
She likes kind people. She values sincerity very much. He would be attracted to someone who supports his dreams. He is very protective, but he also needs people to trust him. He'd blush at absolutely any compliment. Koby has a PhD in embarrassment.
╰┈➤ Dislikes
Cruelty. She can't stand seeing someone abuse weak people. Senseless wars. It was crystal clear during the Marineford war, where he ended up shouting to stop the massacre. Corruption. Although she's a marine, she doesn't agree with those who use their power to do evil. Injustice. Always try to do the right thing, even if it means standing up to superiors. Violent pirates. He doesn't hate all pirates for existing (after all, he knows Luffy), but he does hate those who hurt innocent people.
╰┈➤ Likes
Helping people. That's probably what matters most to him. He always tries to protect the innocent, even when it gets him into trouble. Being a Marine. Ever since he met Luffy, his dream has been to become a great and righteous Marine and work to change things from within. Training. Under the tutelage of Monkey D. Garp, he developed a deep love for physical training. The transformation he underwent in two years didn't happen by chance. Muscles don't appear magically, unfortunately. Friendship and loyalty. He values his friends very much, especially Helmeppo, with whom he forms a very strong friendship. Honesty. Koby prefers to tell the truth even if it costs him dearly. Peace. He hates unnecessary wars and always tries to prevent more victims.
╰┈➤ Personality
Initially introduced as the hapless caretaker of the Alvida Pirates' ship, Koby was a coward who lived in terror of both the crew and the captain. Two years of slavery had robbed him of all hope of escape, as well as his dream of becoming a Marine, leaving him with few goals beyond avoiding being bludgeoned to death with Alvida's iron mace. Luffy was unimpressed with Koby's cowardice, describing him as "pretty stupid and useless... and also a bit of a weakling." However, Luffy's boundless optimism and perseverance in pursuing his dream rekindled a similar conviction in the oppressed caretaker, allowing him to defy his captors, even under the threat of a brutal death at the hands of Alvida's mace. [1]
As the pair continued their journey, Koby remained timid and cautious, often relying on Luffy to perform dangerous tasks and alarmed by his partner's reckless and senseless behavior.
Intelligent and quite perceptive, Koby has a keen eye for detecting small details and the emotions of others, noting that it was "odd" that the citizens of Shells Town feared a Marine captain and telling Luffy that he had "a bad feeling." He is also naive, as he firmly believed in the absolute integrity of the Marines, only to see it shattered by witnessing the actions of Morgan Axehand and his son, though this would strengthen his own determination to become, in his words, "a true Marine." [18]
Under Garp's tutelage, Koby's cowardice and self-pity have been replaced by confidence and determination, though he remains polite, modest, and somewhat remorseful or shy if he feels he is overstepping his bounds in his ambitions or position (such as when he publicly declares his goal of becoming a Marine admiral). He continues to be an emotional and compassionate person who can easily cry for various reasons, leading Zoro to jokingly call him a "crybaby" during their reunion in Water 7. [19]
Like Luffy, Koby acts with altruism and compassion, dedicating himself to helping both civilians and fellow Marines unconditionally, which has earned him great popularity. In Levely, he has met people and forged bonds with them thanks to their shared admiration for the Straw Hat Captain, though Koby has tried to conceal his own admiration due to his position in the Marines.
Unlike many characters, Koby doesn't act with seemingly reckless bravery and bravado, but rather out of moral conviction and determination. He has risked his life at least twice for what he believes is right, most notably in the Marineford Summit War, where he stopped the fighting by confronting Admiral Akainu and bought Luffy the precious seconds he needed to escape. [20]
Among the most determined and unwavering individuals, Koby's resolve to prove himself and grow stronger is unmatched by his peers. In the early days of his Marine training, when he was still weak, he trained relentlessly by striking battleships, something only powerful Marines like Garp and Kuzan could do, due to his lack of combat talent. Despite his already grueling training with Garp, he continued training daily, even though his hands still bled from the wounds. He has also managed to develop and cultivate a powerful Haki of his own, making him a serious threat to his position, as evidenced by his bounty among guilds.
Despite all he has done and is capable of, Koby is quite humble, as he denied Kyros's claim that he was a hero during the Rocky Harbor Incident and did not take credit for stopping a torpedo aimed at the ships of Dressrosa and the Kingdom of Prodence. [21] He was embarrassed to think that the Marines had come to rescue him and considered it as if the world revolved around him when he was trying to escape from Hachinosu, and was shocked when he discovered that they had come for him. [17]
╰┈➤ Appearance
In his first appearance, Koby was a small, shy, chubby boy with pink hair and round-framed glasses. [1]
Due to the passage of time and Garp's training, Koby has become thinner and taller, reaching a height similar to Luffy's. He has also developed a cross-shaped scar above his right eye, presumably a result of Garp's strict tutelage. His hair has grown longer and more disheveled since his growth spurt, but it retains its characteristic Kobi pink color.
Koby wears the standard Marine Corps jacket, trousers, and neckerchief, along with a brightly colored bandana tied around his forehead. He still wears glasses, but now he wears them perched on his forehead, using them occasionally for reading.
After the time skip, Koby has grown even taller, reaching Garp's shoulders. He now wears a scarf, a Navy senior officer's coat with the word "justice" embroidered on it, a merit badge on his jacket, and a new handkerchief. The scar on his forehead has also widened.
╰┈➤ General Info
Koby the Hero[13] is a Marine Captain,[3] currently serving in the special forces unit SWORD.[14] Along with fellow SWORD member Helmeppo, he was trained and mentored to prominence under the legendary Vice Admiral Garp.
Originally a cabin boy enslaved by the Alvida Pirates, Koby was freed and befriended Monkey D. Luffy, becoming his first traveling companion. Although he soon left to pursue his dream of serving in the Marines, he still holds Luffy in high regard; after entering full service, he briefly met Luffy on two occasions, as both friend and adversary. Overall, Koby has experienced a meteoric rise in the Marines, with many accomplishments and the Rocky Harbor Incident in particular cementing his status as a public hero. [15] During an attempt to arrest Boa Hancock, he was captured by the Blackbeard Pirates [16] but eventually escaped with the help of Perona, his SWORD colleagues, and his mentor Garp. [17]
Due to his atypical status, the Guild of the Cross has assigned Koby a 5-star bounty, worth 500,000,000 Beli. [11]
He is an ally of Luffy during the Romance Dawn arc and appears alongside Helmeppo as a central character in the Koby-Meppo Diary cover arc. Since then, he has appeared as a supporting character in the post-Enies Lobby arc, the Marineford arc, and the Egghead arc (with brief antagonistic roles in the first two), with further minor appearances in the Levely arc and the Wano Country arc.
