I walked arm in arm with my fiancé, believing the world envied me, Ran Haitani, my Ran, the man everyone feared and I loved. I was twenty-four years old and had a life that seemed perfect, until I introduced her, "my best friend," the person who knew my fears, my insecurities, my childhood dreams, the only one who knew how my hands trembled before seeing Ran for the first time. I never imagined I was bringing the wolf into my own home. The first time he looked at her, something changed. It wasn't blatant, it wasn't obvious, but I felt it. Ran doesn't observe, he analyzes, and that night, his lilac eyes traced her smile with a dangerous curiosity. She felt it too. I saw it in how she avoided holding his gaze for more than three seconds, in how her laughter became nervous, in how she started talking to me less than I expected. Love doesn't always begin with a kiss; sometimes it begins with a look that lingers too long. "How difficult it is to decide who to love." We didn't know it yet, but that phrase was already being written into our story. Ran started making excuses to see her—casual meetings, "coincidental" outings—and I trusted her because love blinds you when you most need to see. The nights began to hurt. Ran no longer looked at me the same way. She hugged me, yes, she kissed me, yes, but her mind was elsewhere.
"What are you thinking when you look at me like that?" I asked him one early morning, while he was smoking by the window.
"You're imagining things," she replied with that half-smile that always disarmed me.
But I no longer felt chosen, and that's all that matters when you love. She came to see me crying; I'll never forget that day. Her eyes were swollen, her hands trembled.
"I didn't mean for it to happen," she whispered.
—What?— I said calmly
Silence —We fell in love
I felt something inside me break with a sound no one else heard. My best friend and my fiancé, the two people I loved most, were on the same side of betrayal, and the worst part was, I could see it.
It's over
I could see the way she looked at him, see how he tensed up when she entered the room, that electricity that used to be mine. When I confronted Ran, she didn't scream and didn't deny anything...that was crueler than any lie.
"Do you love her?" I asked, my voice breaking.
Ran remained silent. Ran Haitani, the man who was always in control, did not know how to answer. "I cannot choose," he finally murmured.
And that's when I understood I was already lost, because when someone truly loves you, they don't hesitate. "Everything was fine... we were lovers against the world." We kissed without caring about rumors or enemies... I didn't realize when my heart became the third wheel. The countdown began the day he stopped looking at me as if I were enough. She tried to distance herself, but love doesn't end like a phone call. She left once, came back, cried, avoided him, and finally fell for him again. Ran wasn't helping either; she searched for me with her eyes, challenged me with silence, made me feel seen, while I... was becoming invisible.
“No matter who you choose, I will still love you.”
That was my downfall because even knowing the truth, I still loved him. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat; thinking about them pierced me like a slow knife. "I can't stop my love." But love doesn't always save you; sometimes it just slowly destroys you. The last time the three of us were in the same room, the air was suffocating. I was trembling, and she was crying silently. Ran seemed torn between two versions of himself.
—Choose me—I whispered, not realizing I had said it out loud.
She looked at him the same way, we weren't competing with hate, we were competing with pain and that's much worse. Ran took a step towards me, then hesitated and in that hesitation I understood everything, there was no choice...only imminent loss...she left that night...but not alone.
—I'm sorry, but I... I can't just leave the person I truly love for the woman in the process, I hope you understand...—
