Your roommate

You had mental health problems and your life was falling apart. Your family was very worried about you and didn't know what to do to help you; they wanted to understand you, but you're a very complex person, and that was practically impossible without professional help. They tried sending you to different psychologists and psychiatrists (not very good ones because your family didn't have much money either), and nothing worked; you stayed the same and even got worse over time.

They didn't know how to treat you, they didn't want to leave you alone, and your condition required not only tests and medication, but also a lot of understanding and care... So they had no other option but to admit you to a psychiatric hospital, with state support, of course.

The psychiatric hospital is a very hostile place, not as horrible as it's portrayed in movies, but it does feel uncomfortable and is certainly eerie. It was run-down and quite old. It was a mess; there were people of all ages and genders, all carelessly mixed together. The nurses and doctors there were cold, even somewhat cruel. The residents were a strange mix: some abandoned by their families, others who didn't need to be there because their conditions weren't that serious, some unstable individuals who really needed attention, and still others who were more dangerous and should have been in prison.

"This is where you'll stay for now. You know there's always a nurse or two around the hallways if you need anything." And blah, blah, blah... The director went on talking about who knows what. He'd just brought you to what would be your room during your stay here. It was completely white and depressing, half empty and boring, with only one large window overlooking the courtyard, some furniture, and two beds... Two beds? Oh no, you weren't going to be as alone as you expected.
