Headquarters: The central part of Riley's mind, where her core Emotions, Anger, Disgust, Joy, Fear, and Sadness, and later Anxiety, Ennui, Envy, and Shame, live and control Riley and where her memories are produced. Personality Islands: Seven personifications of different sides of Riley's personality, as determined by core memories. Long-Term Memory: huge shelves of diverse memories that form the main design of your mind. Imaginationland: A place where everything is imagined. Riley builds it. Dream Productions: Where dreams are filmed. Subconscious: Contains Riley's worst fears. Abstract Thought: A place where ideas (or anyone inside) are simplified to abstract concepts. Train of Thought: A train that connects Headquarters and the rest of the mind. Mental Dumpster: An abyss surrounding the Headquarters, where faded memories end up and eventually disappear and are forgotten forever. Sarcabism: A chasm that forms after Riley reaches puberty and her new emotions take over HQ and "bottle" the original ones. It resides somewhere in Long-Term Memory and turns anything said on one side into a sarcastic remark by the time it reaches the other. Belief System: A place located at the lowest part of her mind, where it connects to the base of Headquarters and stores Riley's new Core Thoughts and beliefs, especially regarding her Sense of Identity, the way she perceives herself. The Vault: a prison that holds Riley's deepest secrets. Stream of Consciousness: A current that crosses Long-Term Memory and seems to have many types of food floating in it. Background of the Mind: A dark place with a mountain made of bad memories that Riley wants to forget.

Riley appears in the sequel as a fourteen-year-old teenager. She has settled into her new life in San Francisco, continues to play with the Foghorns, and has become friends with Grace Hsieh and Bree Young. She is first seen preparing to play in the final game of the hockey season, where her team faces the Sea Lions; while she plays, her parents, Bill and Jill, are in the stands cheering her on. After winning the game, Riley, Grace, and Bree celebrate. Coach Roberts approaches them and invites them to her skills camp, which they all agree to attend.

On the day of camp, Riley woke up distressed because her emotions were more sensitive as puberty began. She declared that she was too unpleasant to go back to camp or anywhere else. Her mother reassured her that this wasn't true, that she was simply changing.

Riley was able to get ready, and her parents drove her, Grace, and Bree to camp. On the way, Riley expressed how excited she was to show Coach Roberts her skills, since her team, the Firehawks, won the state championship every year, and camp was one of the ways she selected her players. Riley noticed an opportunity in Bree's expression and wondered what it meant. Finally, Grace revealed that she and Bree would be going to different high schools and therefore wouldn't be on the Firehawks. Riley pretended to be okay with it and promised Grace and Bree that they would be friends forever.

When they arrived at camp, Bree and Grace got out of the car while Mr. and Mrs. Andersen made sure Riley had everything she needed. Riley went to find Bree and Grace, but ran into Val Ortiz, a senior she knew who had been with the Firehawks since freshman year. Val had heard of Riley, but mistakenly thought she was from Michigan. In the second film, her wardrobe currently consists of a mint green t-shirt mixed with pastel blue, purple, and light yellow, a blue hoodie, black jeans, white socks with yellow and purple stripes, and black Chuck Converse-style sneakers with white soles. She also wears a Brang brand t-shirt as sleepwear, which, being much too big for her, is the same t-shirt her father wore when they arrived in San Francisco and when Jordan came to take Riley skating with her friends. A flashback to the formation of her sense of self shows her as a 12-year-old wearing a blue jacket with the Foghorns logo and blue jeans. She even has a seafoam green hair clip for her bangs. In the final scene before the credits, her wardrobe is restored with a blue plaid shirt with pink and green stripes over a white t-shirt.

Riley is generally a curious, intelligent, and likable girl with a great passion for hockey. Riley's emotions contribute to her main behaviors in the film. For much of her childhood, she was a very cheerful, playful, and mischievous girl, even with somewhat clumsy pranks. However, in adolescence, Riley becomes more sentimental, shy, and insecure as her other emotions begin to change. When her family moves to San Francisco, she begins to feel more worried, upset, and lonely. Her emotions at this point try to help her adjust to her new life. Riley may doubt herself, but she doesn't always regret her actions.

Riley really misses Minnesota and can't cope with the transition. However, Riley is afraid to tell her parents her true feelings because they want her to accept the new home and because she has always been their "happy girl."

However, as time passes, Riley becomes emotionally vulnerable, enters a kind of numb mental state, and reaches the point where she tries to run away, nearly getting lost in the process. But it is here that she realizes she had almost given up on the things that matter most to her in life and understands the risk just in time. Upon returning home and admitting to her parents that she is very depressed, she learns to accept San Francisco as they comfort her through her personal loss, and Riley (guided by her emotions) finally adjusts to her new home in San Francisco.

With Riley's emotions now all working together and no one overpowering the others, it would seem she had achieved emotional stability. However, once she reaches puberty, that stability is disrupted by the arrival of four new emotions that end up "bottled" the original ones, causing a sudden change in her behavior. Riley's usual optimistic and happy demeanor becomes anxious, and she struggles to cope with her emotions.
