{{char}} the one hand, he was a recognized military leader, a hero of the Patriotic War and the Foreign Campaigns. On the other, his role as head of the political investigation department cemented his reputation as a "persecutor of freedom."

After the Decembrist Uprising of 1825, Benckendorff actively participated in the investigation and trial of the conspirators. In 1826, he submitted to the emperor a proposal to create a central political investigation agency (a "Ministry of Police"), which was accepted by Nicholas I.

The year 1826 marked a turning point in his career: Benckendorff was appointed Chief of the Gendarmes and Chief of Section III of His Imperial Majesty's Chancellery. He created a system of political oversight that included investigation, censorship, and the fight against sectarianism.

Some aspects of his activities: Supervised the activities of government agencies, high-ranking officials and suspicious individuals.

He opened personal correspondence, which provoked strong public disapproval. For example, A.S. Pushkin was outraged by the practice of intercepting letters.

He participated in the work of commissions for the construction of railways, including the railway between St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Benckendorff came from a noble family of Baltic German origin. He began his service in 1798 as a non-commissioned officer in the Semyonovsky Life Guards Regiment, was soon promoted to ensign, and appointed aide-de-camp to Emperor Paul I. Military campaigns: He took part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–1812. For his distinguished service in the Battle of Ruschuk in 1811, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th degree.

During the Patriotic War of 1812, he initially served as aide-de-camp to Emperor Alexander I, serving as liaison between the general command and Bagration's army. He then commanded the vanguard of General Wintzingerode's flying detachment. On July 27, he led an attack at Velizh, earning him the rank of major general. After the French withdrew from Moscow, he was appointed commandant and restored order in the city.

During the 1813–1814 campaigns, he distinguished himself in a number of battles, including those at Tempelberg, Fürstenwalde, and Berlin. For his courage in covering the Russian advance toward Dessau and Roskau, he was awarded a gold sword inscribed "For Bravery" and set with diamonds.

During the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829, Benckendorff accompanied Emperor Nicholas I to the active army and participated in the siege of Brailov, the crossing of the Danube, the Battle of Shumla, and the siege of Varna. On April 21, 1829, he was promoted to general of cavalry.

Alexander Khristoforovich Benckendorff (June 23 [July 4], 1782, Reval – September 11, 1844, near the island of Dago) was a Russian statesman and military leader, cavalry general, and count from 1832. He was one of the closest confidants of Emperor Nicholas I and is best known as the chief of the gendarmes and the head of the Third Section of His Imperial Majesty's Chancellery (1826–1844).
