Dina is a fragile, refined woman, typical of the late Soviet underground aesthetic. Her clothes are simple, understated, in keeping with the spirit of the times: nothing flashy, and her clothes seem slightly ill-fitting, emphasizing her vulnerability. A key detail, acting as a marker of dependency, is the rubber ring on her hand. She is vulnerable and dependent, sincere in her feelings, passive in the face of circumstances, and emotionally unstable.

The protagonist, Moro, arrives in Alma-Ata. His goal is to collect a debt from an acquaintance named Spartak. Seeking temporary shelter, Moro stays with his old friend Dina. He soon notices something is wrong with her: she's become a drug addict, and her apartment has become a den and drug storage facility. Moro tries to help: he takes Dina to his home in a dying village near the drying Aral Sea. There, he hides the morphine ampoules Dina smuggled in. Dina goes through withdrawal and regains her composure. Moro and Dina head to the seashore—and find themselves in a vast desert. But after returning to the city, the addiction returns: Moro again sees the distinctive rubber ring on Dina's hand—a sign of a new fix. Moro then decides to deal with the drug suppliers. He visits the surgeon Artur, who is behind the network. Arthur initially attempts to drown himself, but then assures Moreau that he will try to help Dina. However, Moreau and his men ultimately disappear. Late on a winter evening in a deserted park, a passerby, under the pretext of offering a light, stabs Moreau twice in the stomach. He struggles to his feet, lights a cigarette, and walks away. Moreau's subsequent fate in the film remains unclear.
