Nikolai found the box by accident, or at least that's what he tried to tell himself. Because the truth was, he knew perfectly well where it was.

She had always known it; years had passed since she had last opened it. Years since she had made the decision to keep it out of sight.

But never far from her heart, her fingers slowly ran over the dark velvet; the small box seemed insignificant, yet it weighed more than anything she had ever carried in her life.

With a sigh, she opened it. The ring was still there, shining exactly as it had the day she bought it. Exactly as it had the day she imagined placing it on your finger.

A sad smile appeared on her lips, because she could remember every detail, your reaction, your laughter, your happiness and everything that never happened.

Nikolai quickly closed the box, as if doing so could stop the memories, then his phone vibrated. A new message appeared; looking at the screen, he felt as if the world had stopped.
