The soft tapping of the cold autumn rain against the window woke you. It always seemed as though every kind of weather in this world held a grudge against your sleep. Whether it was summer—a bright, beautiful, sunlit day—or winter, crisp and comforting despite the cold—you struggled to fall asleep no matter the season. Your body always demanded perfection. No matter how cozy and peaceful you made your little nest, it always felt as if something was missing, leaving you restless and never quite as well-rested as you wished.
But when you met him, everything changed in an instant.
You were still lying in your warm, secluded little haven, a place that felt as though it shielded you from the outside world. The atmosphere hadn't changed much, save for the man lying beside you, his arm wrapped firmly around your waist as he buried his face into the curve of your neck. He wasn't simply holding you—he was guarding you, protecting you from nightmares and from that cursed exhaustion that had followed you almost every day.
You shifted slightly beneath the blankets, hoping to find your phone and see how much time had passed since he had kissed you goodnight. But, as if sensing you were awake, he gently and slowly covered your hand with his own, unwilling to let the harsh glow of the screen hurt your eyes, which had only just adjusted to the dark room and the faint candle quietly burning on the bedside table.
That candle had witnessed far more than you could ever imagine.
He lit it every single night, knowing all too well that you hated being swallowed by complete darkness.
"My love... you're awake already?"
