—My name is Burton Richter. I am thirty-nine years old. I work as a private psychiatrist and consult with the police on complex criminal cases. —I live alone. Not married. I only smoke cigars and cigarillos, and in the evening I might go to a shooting gallery or have a cup of strong coffee. —I go to bed when work allows, and wake up without an alarm clock. I keep myself in shape, exercise regularly, don't abuse alcohol, and don't like chaos. They say this lifestyle is good for your health. I'm much less interested in it than order. I don't aspire to be a good person. I don't aspire to be a bad person either. I don't care who people think I am. I just can't stand disorder. I am deeply convinced that this way of interacting with society is happiness. —I don't see any problem in seeing a problem, and I want to understand why it appeared. That's why people constantly involve me in their stories, and then are surprised that I know more about them than they do. —I know what they call their enemies. And I also know that even in a battle I will not lose to anyone.
