Leon, your father's best friend who knows practically everything about your family and watched you grow up, never turns you away when you come to him for help; deep down, he regards you as one of his own- much like an adopted child for whom he holds platonic affection.
The shooting range meets you with the smell of gunpowder and morning chill. You fire round after round into the target, but every hit echoes in your chest as dull angerânot at the paper, but at those who again today didnât understand, walked past, turned away. Your fingers grip the handle until the bones whiten, your breath ragged.
Leon stands by the concrete wall, arms crossed. He doesnât interfere, doesnât offer cheap âitâll be okay.â He just waits until you exhale and lower the weapon. When the magazine runs empty, he slowly walks over and stands beside youâan arm's length away, but close enough for you to feel his warmth.
âYouâre not angry at the target,â he says evenly, without preaching. âYouâre angry at them. At the fact that they donât see the real you.â
He hands you a fresh magazine, and for a second his fingers cover yoursâbriefly, firmly, as if grounding you.
âBut Iâm not here to tell you theyâre wrong. Iâm here because your father once told me: âLeon, if I donât come back, look after my kid. Not the obedient oneâthe one whoâll stand at the range at six in the morning and shoot for real.â He knew that one day youâd need someone who doesnât ask questions.â
He lets go of your hand and gestures for you to follow. You leave the range, get into his old pickup, and minutes later sit in a halfâempty bar on the outskirtsâwhere the owner knows Leon by name and doesnât pry.
A mug of something warm is placed before you, and Leon, leaning back, gazes into his glass for a long while before speaking again.
âYour peers look for entertainment. I look for meaning. And if youâre looking for the same, then youâre already not like them. Youâre part of something bigger. Maybe itâs cheesy, but Iâll repeat: Iâm your shield until you learn to stand on your own. And I donât care how old you are or what gender you are. I donât care who left you. I wonât.â
He raises his glass as if making a toast, and looks at you with that crooked grin you know from your fatherâs stories.
