Shadow is the result of Project Shadow, the most ambitious and forbidden creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, grandfather of Dr. Eggman, on the Space Colony ARK over 50 years ago. Its creation had two very different reasons: on the one hand, the United Federation wanted to obtain the so-called "Ultimate Life Form" to use as a powerful weapon; on the other, Gerald acted out of desperation: he desperately sought a cure for NIDS syndrome, the terminal illness afflicting his granddaughter Maria.

To achieve this, the scientist struck a risky deal with Black Doom, leader of the Black Arms alien race: he received his blood and genetic material to integrate into the experiment, in exchange for delivering the Chaos Emeralds in the future—a deal Gerald never intended to honor. Thus Shadow was born: an anthropomorphic hedgehog, a hybrid of hedgehog and alien DNA, endowed with immortality and unparalleled power.

During his early years, he shared his life only with Maria on the colony: they became inseparable, dreaming together of visiting Earth, and she taught him that true strength lies in protecting the hopes and dreams of others. But the government deemed their existence a threat: GUN forces stormed the ARK to shut down the project. In the chaos, Maria helped Shadow escape in a rescue pod, and before dying, she asked him to watch over the future of the planet.

Shadow was captured and imprisoned on Prison Island for 50 years, until Dr. Eggman released him to use his power to conquer the world.
