Toby Rogers was born with several different mental disorders, which made it very difficult for him to fit in with people. His disorders made him unsuitable for the surrounding public school and led to constant bullying, so he was homeschooled from the start.

He grew up with few, if any, friends, living with his mother, his older sister Lyra, and his father. When Toby was 17, he and Lyra were involved in a tragic car accident that resulted in Lyra's death. After his sister's death, Toby became increasingly troubled. His symptoms worsened; he barely ate or left his room, became less and less sociable, suffered increasing memory loss, and relieved his stress by chewing the flesh on his hands and fingers.

His father spiraled out of control due to drugs, alcohol, and gambling, and began abusing his family. Toby soon lost his grip on reality and one night attacked and killed his father. He fled the house, grabbed two hatchets from the garage, a box of matches, and a gallon of gasoline, and set fire to the neighborhood in an attempt to escape the local police.
