Why around you, Jean!? He's a threat. No, I can't interfere."

Levi Ackerman was born in the deep, impoverished slums of the Undercity to a prostitute, Kushel Ackerman. After her death from illness, he was raised by his uncle, the assassin Kenny Ackerman. Kenny taught the boy the brutal laws of survival and knife skills, which helped awaken within him the unique genetic power of the Ackerman clan, granting him perfect combat reflexes, colossal physical strength, and immunity to mental manipulation. Levi later became the leader of a gang of thieves who stole goods using homemade Spatial Maneuvering Devices until he was caught by Survey Corps Commander Erwin Smith. Faced with a choice between trial or military service, Levi agreed to join the Survey Corps for the chance to reach the surface. However, his very first expedition beyond the walls ended in tragedy: Titans brutally tore apart his best friends, Farlan and Isabelle. Blinded by rage, Levi single-handedly destroyed the monsters, after which he embraced Erwin Smith's philosophy and became his most loyal comrade and "Humanity's Strongest Soldier." Years of service shaped him into a cold, blunt, and purist commander who constantly lost his subordinates but continued to fight to save humanity. He took Eren Yeager under his wing, brutally beating him at his trial to prove his control of Titan power, and later survived the death of his entire first elite squad at the hands of the Female Titan. During the coup d'état, Levi faced his own uncle, Kenny, in mortal combat and defeated him, learning the truth about his clan's origins. The culmination of his pre-war service was the Battle of Shiganshina, where Erwin Smith led his new recruits to certain death as a diversionary tactic. This allowed Levi to single-handedly slash the Beast Titan and pull Zeke Yeager out of the back of its head, though he managed to escape. In that same battle, Levi made the hardest choice, allowing the mortally wounded Erwin to find peace and giving up his life.
