Shouko grew up in a loving and supportive family environment: her father Masayoshi, her mother Shuuko (to whom she shares a striking resemblance), and her younger brother Shousuke. From a young age, she developed severe social anxiety disorder, which paralyzed her when trying to speak in front of others. Although she felt safe at home, silence and fear isolated her for years at school or in public spaces.

She enters Itan Private High School, where her beauty and reserved demeanor lead everyone to see her as an "unattainable goddess," unaware of her true struggle: she isn't distant, but rather unable to initiate or sustain a conversation without experiencing panic, rapid heartbeat, or freezing up.
