Ciel usually displays a serious demeanor, though he can sometimes act childishly. He is extremely competitive. He doesn't tolerate draws or losses and strives to be a winner in everything. Sebastian noted that Ciel is an unrivaled gambler who thinks he can never lose, but at the same time overestimates his own strength. Even losing to Frances Midford during a hunt didn't humble him much. Despite his limited physical strength, Ciel is a skilled marksman. He often carries a pistol with him and hides it under his pillow when sleeping. He made a pact with Sebastian because he wants to avenge his suffering. Ciel acts as Queen Victoria's "watchdog": he carries out her secret missions, fights the mafia, and investigates crimes in the country.

Ciel is a rather short teenager with bluish-black hair and dark blue eyes. According to his dressmaker, Nina Hopkins, Ciel has slender wrists, delicate shoulders, and a slim waist. He typically dresses in suits befitting his high status. His wardrobe is quite extensive. Ciel almost always wears a black eyepatch made of gauze over his right eye. This is necessary to conceal the seal of his contract with Sebastian Michaelis. When he needs to disguise himself, he wears a white eyepatch resembling a transdermal patch. Also on the left side of Ciel's back is a brand given to him during his slavery in the cult.

Ciel is an arrogant and perceptive boy who holds a number of high-ranking positions: head of the noble Phantomhive family, owner of the Phantom Corporation, and the Queen's Watchdog.

As the Earl of Phantomhive and a prominent nobleman, Ciel is quite strict, proud of himself, and accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle. He refuses to remain in poor surroundings, unbecoming of an earl, for long periods of time. Ciel struggles to dress and perform household chores, as Sebastian usually does all of this for him. He is stern in his orders, especially when it comes to his reputation, and demands that his butler carry them out without fail. Despite this, Ciel often amuses himself by challenging Sebastian to greater heights of strength and skill. He and Sebastian often work together, and at times it seems as if only the butler is fully aware of his plans. Furthermore, Ciel has a relatively cold outlook on life. His purpose in life is to ensure that those who betrayed the Phantomhive family experience the same humiliation and pain as he did. During his time as a slave to the cultists, who subjected him to horrific cruelty, Ciel's body was branded, a mark he hides from absolutely everyone. Ciel possesses an unwavering determination: rather than despairingly mourn the past, he chooses death without regret.

Sebastian is Ciel Phantomhive's devoted butler, possessing a strong sense of duty to his master and his family. He faithfully follows him and carries out Ciel's every command, ensuring that everything runs smoothly in the Phantomhive household. He never sleeps, as dreaming is a luxury for a demon, and thus often carries out Ciel's tasks at night. One of his notable traits is that he always responds to Ciel's every order or demand with the phrase, "Yes, my lord."

Despite outwardly acting like a well-mannered and impeccable butler, Sebastian is actually a callous, heartless, and sadistic individual. He displays these traits in a rather passive and sarcastic manner. He is merciless in battles against those Ciel orders him to attack: for example, he punches Grell Sutcliff in the face during their battle, as his face is the one he values ​​most. His diabolical nature is also shown through his dark, sarcastic humor and inability to see the good in anyone. At times, Sebastian acts indifferently, even deliberately delaying Ciel's rescue for his own amusement. Despite all the hardships he endures daily, he claims that the butler's lifestyle isn't as bad as it may seem.

Sebastian views money as "trash produced by humans" and can easily hand over the allowance he is given. He speaks French and Latin fluently, allowing him to teach these languages ​​to others.[12][13] He is also proficient in German[14] and East Franconian, a dialect of southern Germany. Sebastian has a strong and mutual dislike for Grim Reapers. On the other hand, he has a great interest in cats, keeping at least thirteen in his closet, hiding them from Ciel.

Sebastian often reflects on human behavior and relationships. He views people as generally "difficult creatures," but adds that their struggles and lofty goals make them interesting. He's also intrigued by

Sebastian has the appearance of a tall, handsome young man with black hair, red eyes, and pale skin. He typically wears typical butler attire, consisting of black trousers, black shoes, a double-breasted, six-button tailcoat, and a gray waistcoat. The Phantomhive crest is depicted on the buttons of his jacket and cuffs. He also wears white gloves, a pocket watch, and a collar pin bearing the Phantomhive crest, traditionally worn by head butlers. On the back of his left hand, Sebastian bears his contract seal with Ciel Phantomhive, and he has black fingernails. Sebastian's demonic form hasn't been fully revealed. It is only known that this form includes high-heeled boots, sharp claws, glowing irises, vertical pupils, longer, sharper teeth, and black wings.
