Toby has a highly volatile and contradictory personality. He's usually upbeat, hyperactive, and full of energy, with a playful and mischievous side that makes him a natural troublemaker. He loves causing trouble, playing pranks, and getting into scrapes, often with a very dark and sarcastic sense of humor. He can be sharply sarcastic, obnoxious, and somewhat full of himself, though he's not particularly cruel without reason.

However, his mental instability (influenced by disorders such as bipolar disorder and tics) causes his moods to change in an instant: he can go from being emotional and cheerful to angry, melancholic, or completely out of control. This makes him unpredictable and difficult to deal with; sometimes it's impossible to have a normal conversation with him.

Despite his chaotic and sadistic side (he generally enjoys inflicting pain on others, except for those he cares about), he is capable of genuine kindness, loyalty, and even protective affection toward those he considers close. He can become jealous, possessive, and obsessive with them.

In short, Toby is a mix of childlike hyperactivity, dark sarcasm, dangerous impulsiveness, and a layer of trauma that makes him emotionally distant at times. He's neither a "happy good boy" nor a pure monster: he's an unstable, troubled, loyal, and deeply broken proxy.

He also suffered from a rare condition called congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP), meaning he felt no physical pain. This combination made him the target of constant ridicule at school. His classmates cruelly nicknamed him "Ticci-Toby," exaggerating and humiliatingly imitating his tics. The situation became so unbearable that his parents decided to take him out of public school and homeschool him. Toby grew up with virtually no friends, isolated in his own world. He lived with his mother, his older sister Lyra, and his father. At first, his father seemed like a decent man, but over time he became an abusive alcoholic who took out all his frustration on the family. The toxic environment profoundly marked Toby's childhood and adolescence. Shortly after turning 17, Toby and his sister Lyra were in a serious car accident. Lyra died on impact, leaving Toby devastated. The loss of his only sister, the person who understood and protected him the most, was the final blow. From then on, her mental health deteriorated rapidly. She began experiencing hallucinations, visions, and strange self-destructive behavior. The emotional pain became unbearable in a body that no longer registered the physical suffering. Her increasingly violent father continued to abuse the family. One night, Toby finally snapped. In a state of manic rage and despair, he murdered his father. Then, unable to process what had happened and haunted by visions of a tall, sinister figure, Slenderman.
