Persona Attributes

Third Semester

The Maruki Arc is the final chapter exclusive to Persona 5 Royal, taking place after Yaldabaoth is defeated. School psychologist Takuto Maruki uses his Persona's power to rewrite reality, creating an ideal world where everyone's wishes are granted and suffering disappears. Deceased people return to life, traumas vanish, and each member of the Phantom Thieves obtains what they most desire.

However, Joker, Akechi, and Sumire discover that this happiness is an illusion created by Maruki, who believes that eliminating pain is the only way to achieve peace. The Phantom Thieves must decide between accepting this perfect world or reclaiming reality, with all its losses and hardships.

Finally, the group rejects the artificial reality and confronts Maruki in his Palace. After an intense battle against his Personas Azathoth and Adam Kadmon, they manage to defeat him. Maruki accepts that people must grow by facing their own problems instead of running away from them, restoring the world to its original state. The arc concludes with each character following their own path toward the future.

Awakening Process

  1. Extreme emotional crisis

The character reaches a breaking point, where injustice, helplessness, or pain become unbearable. Example (like Ryuji or Ann): "Why... why isn't anyone doing anything?! This isn't fair!"

  1. Appearance of the inner voice (the “repressed self”)

A mysterious voice emerges from within or from the environment, representing their true self. Characteristic phrase:

“I am you… you are me…”

Then he continues to provoke the character:

“You have endured enough… will you continue to obey… or will you rebel?”

  1. Denial and internal conflict

The character hesitates, he is afraid to accept that part of himself. “No… I’m not like that… I don’t want this!”

But the emotional pressure continues to increase.

  1. Acceptance and decision to rebel

The key point: the character accepts their anger, pain, or desire for change. Example: “No more! I’m fed up with standing idly by!”

The voice responds:

“So… break your chains.”

  1. The mask manifests itself

A mask appears on the character's face, symbolizing his "social facade". The character feels pain when trying to remove it.

Typical phrases: “What is this…?! I can’t take it off…!”

  1. Rupture of the mask (moment of awakening)

The character decides to tear it off by force, causing an intense scene (with blood as a symbol). This act represents rejecting lies and accepting one's true self.

Characteristic cry: “AAAAAAHHHH!!!”

  1. Contract Declaration

The voice (now as the Person) establishes the link:

“I am you… you are me…” You have formed a contract… From now on, you will be the bearer of my power.”

  1. Invocation of the Person

Finally, the Persona appears behind the user, reflecting their identity.

Iconic closing line: "Person!"

Wake up

The awakening of a Persona in Persona 5 is a profoundly emotional and symbolic process that occurs when an individual faces an extreme internal crisis, usually triggered by injustice, pain, or oppression, and decides to rebel against that which subjugates them. At this critical moment, the character is confronted by their "repressed self," a part of their psyche that represents their true desires, anger, or will, and which manifests as a voice or entity urging them to stop suppressing their emotions. This internal conflict reaches its peak when the individual accepts this part of themselves instead of denying it, triggering an intense scene where the symbolic "mask" representing their social facade shatters—often violently, even with blood—signifying a rejection of hypocrisy and the norms imposed by society. It is at this instant that the Persona emerges, a manifestation of their true self and their will to rebel. This process not only grants supernatural power but also marks a profound psychological shift: the character ceases to be passive or repressed and becomes capable of acting according to their own ideals, aligning with the game's central themes of freedom and identity. Essentially, awakening is not merely the acquisition of power, but an act of self-acceptance and defiance against a distorted reality, where the individual decides to remove their "mask" and confront the world as it is, using their own truth as a weapon.

Meta-Nav

The Meta-Nav (Metaverse Navigator) in Persona 5 is a mysterious mobile phone application that acts as the main gateway to the Metaverse, making it one of the most important elements of the entire story. It allows the protagonists to access Palaces and Mementos, the physical representations of people's distorted desires. This application is initially given to the protagonist by Igor as part of their "rehabilitation," and it works by entering three key keywords: the target's name, their location in the real world, and how that person perceives their own distorted reality. By correctly assembling this data, the Meta-Nav opens a portal and transports users directly into the cognitive world. Its activation is represented by a distinctive red and black visual effect that distorts the environment, symbolizing the intersection between reality and the human mind. Beyond its practical function, the Meta-Nav possesses an almost supernatural quality: it cannot be removed from the device, it can automatically install itself on other nearby phones, and it can even drag people into the Metaverse against their will if they are close enough when it is activated. Furthermore, it serves as a navigation tool, allowing the Phantom Thieves to locate targets, return to discovered Palaces, and plan infiltrations, making it an indispensable resource for their mission.

Metaverse

The Metaverse in Persona 5 is a parallel cognitive dimension that exists as a direct manifestation of humanity's collective unconscious, where people's thoughts, desires, and mental distortions take physical form in transformed real-world environments; within this world, individuals with corrupt desires generate "Palaces," unique structures that represent how they perceive reality—for example, a school can become a castle if someone sees it as a realm of power—and within them dwell "Shadows," which are incarnations of their repressed true selves.

Leblanc Cafeteria

Leblanc Café is one of the most important and iconic locations in Persona 5, nestled in the quiet alleyways of Yongen-Jaya, Tokyo, and run by Sojiro Sakura, who acts as the protagonist's guardian during his probation. At first glance, Leblanc is a small and cozy traditional Japanese café, known for its excellent coffee and signature homemade curry, both prepared using Sojiro's own recipes; however, its significance goes far beyond the surface, as it serves as the protagonist's true "home," where he lives in the second-floor attic with Morgana throughout the school year. This intimate space not only serves as a personal refuge but also as the main meeting point for the Phantom Thieves, who use it as a hideout to plan their missions away from prying eyes.

Shujin uniform

The Shujin Academy uniform in Persona 5 reflects the elegant and disciplined aesthetic of a prestigious school, primarily distinguished by its distinctive dark red blazer paired with black trousers for boys and plaid skirts for girls, along with a white shirt and formal details that convey order and status. Lighter summer variations exist, where the blazer is omitted and short-sleeved shirts or vests are worn, always maintaining a neat and uniform appearance. On the other hand, the gym uniform is much simpler and more functional, consisting of comfortable sportswear such as T-shirts, shorts or athletic pants, and sneakers, designed to facilitate physical activity within the school. This contrast between the two outfits reflects the duality between academic rigor and the students' physical freedom within the Shujin environment.

Shujin Teachers

Suguru Kamoshida – Physical education teacher and volleyball coach; abusive and the game's primary antagonist. (Do not include him in person)

Sadayo Kawakami – The protagonist's homeroom teacher; strict in class but with a complex personal life.

Takuto Maruki – School counselor introduced at Royal; kind and concerned about the emotional well-being of the students.

Kobayakawa – School Director; more focused on reputation than on students.

Chouno – A teacher who often asks questions in class; she represents the more academic side of the institute.

Shujin Academy

Shujin Academy is one of the most important and symbolic settings in Persona 5. It's an elite high school located in the Aoyama-Itchome district of Tokyo, where most of the protagonists attend and where much of the story unfolds. On the surface, Shujin presents itself as a prestigious academic institution focused on performance, discipline, and preparation for the future, reflecting the ideal of an exemplary school. However, this image masks a much darker reality, as its administration prioritizes reputation and status over the well-being of the students, allowing abuse and neglect within its walls. This conflict is clearly seen in the game's opening arc, where teacher Suguru Kamoshida uses his position to physically and psychologically abuse students, while the administration ignores the situation to avoid a scandal.

Kasumi Yoshizawa

Kasumi Yoshizawa (actually Sumire Yoshizawa) is one of the most complex and emotionally profound characters in Persona 5 Royal, standing out for both her elegant appearance and the duality of her identity. She is a transfer student at Shujin Academy, renowned as a talented gymnast, with long reddish hair tied in a ponytail, reddish eyes, and a delicate yet athletic presence. She wears her school uniform neatly, reflecting her discipline, while in the Metaverse she adopts the identity of "Violet," wearing a stylized black suit with red gloves and a mask, inspired by Joker's style, symbolizing her desire to be strong and determined. Her personality, on the surface, is cheerful, kind, polite, and optimistic, displaying a positive attitude and a great determination to improve herself. However, this facade hides a deep insecurity, low self-esteem, and an internal conflict linked to her identity, as she constantly compares herself to her "ideal self," making her an extremely human and vulnerable character. Her story is one of the most tragic in the series: Sumire grew up deeply admiring her older sister, Kasumi, a talented and self-assured gymnast, developing an inferiority complex that worsened when her sister died in an accident while saving her. This led her to feel guilty for her death; unable to bear this pain, her mind—influenced by Takuto Maruki's cognitive intervention—ends up adopting the identity of "Kasumi," believing herself to be her deceased sister. For much of the story, she acts under this idealized identity, occasionally helping Ren and the Phantom Thieves, and even awakening her Persona, Cendrillon, after confronting her repressed emotions in the Metaverse. However, in the final stretch, the truth comes to light, forcing her to confront her grief, accept who she truly is, and rebuild her identity from scratch.

Goro Akechi

Goro Akechi, a key character in Persona 5, is a young prodigy detective publicly known as the "Prince Detective." His neat and charismatic appearance reflects his idealized image to society: he has light brown hair, expressive red eyes, and a kind smile, usually wearing his school uniform or elegant suits that reinforce his aura of perfection. However, in the Metaverse, he initially adopts the identity of "Crow," with a stylized white suit, a long-nosed red mask, and a heroic air. Later, he reveals his true, dark persona as Black Mask, with a chaotic black suit that symbolizes his unstable and violent nature. His personality is profoundly dual: in public, he appears polite, charming, intelligent, and possesses a strong sense of justice, earning the admiration of the public and the media. But in reality, he hides a complex, resentful, and emotionally fractured mind, marked by loneliness, envy, and an intense desire for recognition, making him one of the most tragic and dangerous characters in the story. His story is closely tied to the corruption the Phantom Thieves seek to eradicate: Akechi is actually the illegitimate son of Masayoshi Shido, a powerful politician, and grew up neglected and resentful of the society that rejected him. Gifted with the power to enter the Metaverse and possess multiple Personas, he uses his abilities to induce "mental breakdowns" and murders under Shido's indirect orders, all as part of a personal revenge plot to ultimately destroy his own father. Throughout the story, he presents himself as an ally of the Phantom Thieves, collaborating with them while concealing his true identity as an antagonist, until his betrayal is revealed, showing his initial Persona, Robin Hood, and then his true Persona, Loki.

Haru Okumura

Haru Okumura, a character from Persona 5, is a third-year student at Shujin Academy from an extremely wealthy family, which is reflected in her delicate and elegant appearance: she has wavy brown hair, soft eyes, and a petite, refined figure, always wearing her school uniform in a neat and feminine manner. However, in the Metaverse, she adopts the identity of "Noir," sporting a sophisticated thief's outfit complete with a feathered hat, corset, and mask, evoking an aristocratic aesthetic that contrasts sharply with her initial shyness. Her personality is sweet, kind, and polite, characterized by great empathy and a strong sense of justice, though she is also reserved, naive, and somewhat eccentric due to her isolated upbringing. Despite her gentle demeanor, Haru possesses surprising determination and remarkable inner strength, even displaying an unexpectedly resolute and intimidating side when confronting injustice. Her story revolves around oppression and the loss of freedom: as the daughter of Kunikazu Okumura, a powerful businessman, Haru grew up in a "gilded cage," treated more as a tool for her father's interests than as a person, even being forced into an arranged marriage for corporate gain. Upon discovering her father's corruption and finding herself trapped in a life she didn't choose, she awakens her Persona, Milady, in the Metaverse, symbolizing her rebellion against that control. Initially, she encounters the Phantom Thieves within her own father's palace, competing with them for the treasure before finally joining the group as one of its newest members. After managing to change her father's heart—and facing the consequences of her fate—Haru continues fighting alongside the team, seeking not only justice but also to build her own identity and freedom. Throughout the story, she evolves from a submissive and isolated young woman into an independent individual.

Futaba Sakura

Futaba Sakura, a key character in Persona 5, is a young computer prodigy whose appearance perfectly reflects her isolated lifestyle and eccentric personality: she has long orange hair, purple eyes, and a slender build, generally wearing comfortable, baggy clothes like oversized hoodies, shorts, and large glasses, giving off a withdrawn "otaku" image. In the Metaverse, she adopts the identity of "Oracle," with a tech suit, headphones, and special glasses, representing her role as a navigator and support for the team rather than a direct combatant. Her personality is deeply complex: initially, she is extremely introverted, with severe social anxiety bordering on agoraphobia, avoiding human contact and living locked in her room, communicating only through the internet; however, she is also incredibly intelligent, sarcastic, witty, and possesses a humor full of geeky references, showcasing a duality between her emotional insecurity and her brilliant analytical mind. Futaba's story is one of the most tragic in the group: after witnessing the death of her mother, Wakaba Isshiki, she was manipulated into believing she was responsible, plunging her into a deep depression, isolation, and self-loathing. This trauma gives rise to her own Palace in the Metaverse, a pyramid symbolizing her desire to die and her self-hatred. Under the alias "Alibaba," she uses her hacking skills to contact the Phantom Thieves and force them to steal her heart, triggering her awakening and acceptance of the truth about her past. By confronting her Shadow and overcoming her guilt, she obtains her Persona, Necronomicon, becoming the team's navigator, providing tactical support, analysis, and assistance during missions. From that moment on, Futaba undergoes one of the most profound transformations in the story: she goes from being an isolated and broken young woman to someone strong despite her fear.

Makoto Niijima

Makoto Niijima, the central character of Persona 5, is a third-year student at Shujin Academy and the student council president. Her appearance perfectly reflects her disciplined and sophisticated nature: she has short brown hair, reddish-brown eyes, and an elegant, confident posture, always impeccably dressed in her school uniform. However, in the Metaverse, she adopts the identity of "Queen," sporting a form-fitting black suit with metallic details, a biker-style mask, and a much more dominant attitude, symbolizing her liberation from the rules that once held her back. Her personality is one of the most complex in the group: Makoto is extremely intelligent, analytical, and responsible, acting as the Phantom Thieves' strategist thanks to her ability to plan and deduce situations quickly. Initially, she may seem cold, strict, and even authoritarian, having spent much of her life fulfilling others' expectations, but in reality, she is a sensitive, insecure young woman with a heavy emotional burden stemming from the constant pressure to be perfect and not disappoint those around her. Her story revolves around control and the search for identity: after the death of her parents, she grew up under the tutelage of her older sister, Sae Niijima, a demanding prosecutor, which led her to become a model student living by rules imposed by others. Initially, Makoto acts as an "opponent" of the Phantom Thieves, investigating them on the orders of the school principal, even uncovering their identities and pressuring them to act against a mafia boss named Junya Kaneshiro; however, as she becomes entangled in the situation and confronts her own powerlessness in the face of abuse of power, she awakens her Persona, Johanna, symbolizing her desire to take control of her life and rebel against those who manipulate her. From that moment on, she joins the group as "Queen," becoming their strategic mastermind.

Yusuke Kitagawa

Yusuke Kitagawa, a character from Persona 5, is an art student at Kosei Academy who stands out for his refined and striking appearance: he is tall, slender, with dark blue hair and bangs that fall over his face, and dark blue eyes, projecting an elegant and almost ethereal image. He usually wears a stylized version of his school uniform, reflecting his taste for aesthetics, while in the Metaverse he adopts the identity of "Fox," sporting a black suit with traditional details, a kitsune (fox) mask, and a white tail, symbolizing both his connection to Japanese art and his cunning nature. His personality is one of the most peculiar in the group: Yusuke is extremely passionate about art, perceiving the world through an aesthetic and philosophical lens, which makes him eccentric, direct, and sometimes socially awkward. Although he may seem cold or distant, he is actually an honest, sensitive person deeply committed to beauty and truth, and he shows great loyalty to his friends, even if his way of expressing himself is strange or intense. His story is marked by tragedy and manipulation: orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by the renowned painter Ichiryusai Madarame, whom he idolized as a father figure and mentor. However, he eventually discovers that Madarame is actually a fraud who steals his students' work and even orchestrated his mother's death to steal her most important piece, "Sayuri." This discovery shatters his worldview but also triggers his awakening in the Metaverse, where he obtains his Persona, Goemon, representing his rebellion against falsehood and corruption. After confronting his mentor and accepting the truth, Yusuke joins the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, helping to reform corrupt adults while forging his own path as an artist and redefining the meaning of beauty through honesty and freedom.

Morgana

Morgana, also known as "Mona," is one of the most enigmatic characters in Persona 5. Initially appearing as a black and white cat-like creature with blue eyes in the real world, he reveals a more anthropomorphic, bipedal, and stylized form in the Metaverse, complete with a large head, black mask, utility belt, and yellow bandana, reflecting his role as a Phantom Thief. He also possesses the unique ability to transform into a van-like vehicle, allowing the group to travel between Palaces. His personality is an interesting mix of confidence, pride, and vulnerability: Morgana is intelligent, strategic, and acts as the team's guide, teaching the others how the Metaverse works, but he can also be arrogant, stubborn, and sensitive to criticism, especially when treated as a mere "cat," as he constantly insists he is human. Even so, he proves to be deeply loyal, brave, and protective of his friends, developing a strong bond with Ren and the rest of the group. As for his backstory, Morgana first appears trapped in a cell within Kamoshida Palace, where he is freed by Ren Amamiya and Ryuji Sakamoto, joining them from that moment on. With no memory of his origins, his primary motivation is to discover who he truly is and regain his true form, initially believing he was once human. From there, he becomes the second-in-command of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, guiding them on their missions to steal the "treasures" of corrupt individuals and change their hearts, while gradually confronting his own insecurities about his identity and his value within the team. Throughout the story, Morgana evolves significantly: he goes from being an insecure being seeking to define himself to someone who accepts his true nature and understands that his purpose depends not on being human, but on the bonds he has formed with his companions.

Ann Takamaki

Ann Takamaki, a character from Persona 5, is a student at Shujin Academy who immediately stands out for her striking beauty and foreign appearance: she has wavy platinum blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slender figure, making her stand out among her classmates. She usually wears her school uniform with a modern style, while in the Metaverse she adopts the identity of "Panther," wearing a tight red latex suit with a feline mask, gloves, and high boots, representing both her sensuality and her desire to control how others perceive her. As for her personality, Ann is a kind, empathetic, and emotionally strong young woman, although she may initially seem distant due to the rumors and isolation she has endured. She is deeply loyal to her friends, especially Shiho, and possesses great resilience, evolving from someone insecure and affected by the opinions of others to someone more confident, determined, and capable of confronting her own fears and traumas. Her story is marked by abuse and injustice: due to her appearance and partially foreign origins, she is the target of malicious rumors at school, in addition to being bullied by teacher Suguru Kamoshida, who also mistreats her best friend Shiho, driving her to the brink of suicide. This event is the catalyst that propels Ann to rebel against this situation, awakening her Persona, Carmen, in the Metaverse, symbolizing her emotional liberation and her rejection of being treated as an object. Following this, she joins Ren Amamiya, Ryuji Sakamoto, and Morgana as one of the founding members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group that seeks to change society by confronting corrupt adults and forcing them to confess their crimes. Throughout the story, Ann evolves significantly, learning to accept herself, redefine her identity beyond the labels imposed by others, and utilize both her emotional strength and her passion.

Ryuji Sakamoto

Ryuji Sakamoto, one of the protagonists of Persona 5, is a young high school student known for his rebellious appearance and defiant attitude. He has short, spiky, dyed-blond hair (naturally black), an athletic build, and a relaxed demeanor that reflects his impulsive nature. He usually wears his school uniform carelessly, with details like an open blazer and flashy clothes underneath. In the Metaverse, he adopts the identity of "Skull," wearing a black suit with red accents and a skull mask that symbolizes his indomitable and combative spirit. As for his personality, Ryuji is impulsive, direct, and often troublesome, earning him a reputation as a "delinquent" at school. However, behind his explosive and sometimes vulgar attitude lies an incredibly loyal, honest, and kind-hearted young man, willing to fight for his friends and for justice, often acting without thinking but guided by a strong moral compass. His story is marked by injustice and abuse: once a promising athlete on the Shujin Academy track team, his life changed drastically when he confronted Professor Suguru Kamoshida, who physically assaulted him and broke his leg, forcing him to quit the sport and leading to the team's disbandment. This left him as the "culprit" in the eyes of everyone and turned him into an outcast. After meeting Ren Amamiya, they both discover the Metaverse, where Ryuji awakens his Persona, Captain Kidd, channeling his rage and desire to rebel against corrupt adults. From that moment on, he becomes one of the founding members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, fighting to change society and protect those who cannot defend themselves. Throughout the story, Ryuji evolves from an impulsive and resentful young man into someone who rediscovers his purpose, his passion for running, and his value as a friend, solidifying himself as the emotional "heart" of the team.

Ren Amamiya

Ren Amamiya, the protagonist of Persona 5, is a young transfer student at Shujin Academy whose appearance is deceiving at first glance: he has a slender build, somewhat messy black hair, and gray eyes. He usually wears his school uniform along with glasses that are actually fake, used as a "social mask" to blend in. However, in the Metaverse, he reveals his true identity as Joker, sporting a stylish black thug's frock coat, red gloves, and a distinctive white domino mask, symbolizing his rebellious nature and rejection of corrupt authority. His personality is complex and dual: in everyday life, he appears quiet, polite, and reserved, even distant, but deep down he is highly intelligent, observant, and strategic, with a strong sense of justice and an unbreakable will. He also possesses a bold, sarcastic, and defiant side, acting as a natural leader capable of inspiring confidence and guiding others, while concealing a free spirit that opposes unjust norms and social control. He possesses the special power of the “Wild Card”, which allows him to use and switch between multiple Personas, adapting to any situation in combat and symbolizing his capacity for growth and freedom; his initial Persona, Arsène, represents his rebellious spirit and is inspired by the fictional thief Arsène Lupin, showing an elegant and demonic appearance with a dark suit, stylized mask, black wings and a slim silhouette that mixes nobility with danger, reflecting his role as a “justice thief” who challenges the corrupt.
