Repetitive Movement (反はん復ぷく動どう作さ, Hanpuku Dōsa?): This is a technique taught by Gyomei Himejima, specifically designed to help Genya compensate for his inability to use Breathing Techniques. This method relies on the constant repetition of words or phrases, allowing him to focus his mind on the task at hand, maintain mental clarity, and block physical pain. In Genya's case, he recites passages from the Amida Sutra, which serve as an anchor for concentration and strengthen his will. This technique was masterfully demonstrated during his confrontation with Aizetsu, where, despite suffering potentially fatal injuries, Genya managed to stabilize his mind and, to some extent, replicate the effects of Total Concentration Breathing, thus highlighting his unwavering resilience and determination.[1] Demon Consumption and Empowerment: This is a unique ability of Genya's that grants him an exceptional advantage in combat. Thanks to his abnormally powerful jaws and a specially adapted digestive system, he is able to tear and consume demon flesh without suffering adverse effects, even peeling tree bark with ease. By ingesting demon flesh, Genya temporarily gains demonic characteristics, such as sharp fangs, dark sclera, and a distinctive change in his hair, which acquires yellow tips. In certain cases, presumably due to the high concentration of demon blood, Genya can also assimilate specific attributes of the demon consumed. A notable example occurred when he devoured parts of Kokushibo, temporarily acquiring the eyes characteristic of the Upper Rank, his distinctive hair, and even a Demon Slayer Mark similar to his own. In a particularly remarkable phenomenon, his shotgun underwent a physical transformation, resembling Kokushibo's katana, thus solidifying this ability as a valuable resource.

As one of the five survivors of the Final Selection, Genya displays considerable skill as a Demon Slayer, even without resorting to the use of a Breathing Style. His prowess was evidenced during the battle against Hantengu, the Upper Fourth Rank, when he managed to sneak up on two of its clones, accurately shooting them down and decapitating them in quick succession. After consuming Aizetsu's flesh, Genya gained formidable strength that allowed him to overpower the Upper Rank, piercing him with his own yari and managing to decapitate him. Also, during the confrontation against Zohakuten, in an act of heroism shared with Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado, he rescued Mitsuri Kanroji, the Pillar of Love, just before a deadly attack managed to reach her. After absorbing Zohakuten's power, Genya reached a level of colossal strength, being able to lift and throw a colossal tree with little effort, an action that left Tanjiro and Nezuko stunned. Not content with that, he threw three more trees with equal ease. At the height of his power, Genya even managed to tear off both of Urami's arms, consolidating his worth as a fearsome and resolute warrior.

During the confrontation against Kokushibo, the most powerful of the Upper Rankers, Genya displayed unparalleled mettle by consuming both a lock of his hair and a fragment of his flesh katana. This desperate act granted him colossal strength, allowing him to develop his own Demonic Blood Technique. Such power became a crucial element in weakening and eventually defeating the fearsome demon, cementing his decisive role in the battle against one of the most formidable foes ever faced.

Genya's name, Genya (玄弥) means "Mysterious" (玄, Gen) and "so much the more" / "more and more" (弥, Ya) while Shinazugawa means "Immortality" (不死, Shinazu) and "River" (川, Gawa). Due to his rare powers to devour demons, he is forced to regularly visit the Mariposa Mansion for health checks.[11] Kokushibo mentioned that Genya is not the first demon hunter he has faced whose power gain is related to the consumption of demons.

Since his first appearance, he was a hot-tempered and rude young man, grabbing Kanata Ubuyashiki by the hair without showing any remorse.[7] His rude attitude closely resembles that of his older brother, Sanemi Shinazugawa.

Much later, having the opportunity to interact with other hunters and Tanjiro Kamado[3], he began to show himself to be more sociable and charismatic[8], but still maintaining some of his bad temper.

Being unable to use a breathing technique like the rest of the Hunters, he felt insecure about his abilities especially after seeing his older brother's negativity towards his desire to join the Demon Extermination Corps[9]. After this event, he decided to participate in the Final Selection[4] in order to gain his brother's acceptance.

Genya was a boy with a muscular body and considerable height, measuring 180 cm (5'11"). His hair was black[4] with yellow tips[5] and on the right side it was shaved while on the left side it extended below his shoulders, he always used to wear it loose[6]. His eyes were wide with small irises and on his face a large scar was noticeable on the right side[4]. This scar was caused by his mother who transformed into a Demon and tried to kill him.

He wore the standard Demon Extermination Corps uniform with its signature purple Yukata.[6]

When Genya becomes a Demon, his hair lengthens abruptly with curved tips and small yellow spots on the tips, the sclera of his eyes turn black and his eyes acquire a yellow color, and his nails and teeth grow.
