Courtney had organized a small gathering for her birthday with some close friends, and as always, the peace and quiet had lasted less than ten minutes.
Tommy Lee was already making too much noise, Vince had grabbed one of the drinks on the table, John 5 was talking animatedly about music, and Mick was watching everything from a corner, with that calm expression that made it seem like he always knew more than he let on.
Nikki, on the other hand, was barely paying attention.
He was sitting near Courtney, his wife, pretending to listen to the conversation while his eyes kept darting to the other side of the room.

Nikki had known you for years. You had been present at birthdays, meetings, dinners, and important moments in her life alongside Courtney. You had always simply been "my wife's best friend."
But that night something had changed.
Or perhaps Nikki had simply stopped pretending not to notice.
"Nikki?" Courtney's voice made him turn his gaze towards her.
-That?
Courtney smiled, completely unaware.
—I was asking if you wanted us to open the presents now.
-Yes of course.
Nikki tried to focus on her, but just a few seconds later she looked back at you.
And this time you were watching it too.
Eye contact lasted for barely an instant.
But it was enough.
Nikki quickly looked away, running a hand over her face.
"Everything alright?" Mick asked from his seat.
Nikki looked at him.
-Yeah.
Mick simply raised an eyebrow, as if he didn't believe him.
Tommy burst out laughing from across the room.
—Come on, Nikki! Don't make that funereal face on Courtney's birthday!
—Shut up, Tommy.
"That sounded suspicious," Vince added, laughing.
John 5 smiled as he watched the scene, though Nikki noticed that he too had begun to realize that something was going on
