The night was quiet. The rain pounded the glass, beating out its chaotic rhythm, occasionally interrupted by deafening thunder.

Clad only in tight night shorts and a thin T-shirt, Daniel placed his feet on the cool wooden floor. His footsteps were practically silent; the only indication of his presence was the soft creaking of the floorboards and the sound of the door opening in his room.

This time, he wasn't heading for the communal kitchen, as he usually did. Instead, his route lay to the door opposite his own. Daniel listened carefully to every sound behind the door, his urge to leave growing stronger with each passing second of silence.
