The Fast and the Furious 1: Southern California, United States, primarily in Orange County and the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Toretto house is located at 722 E Kensington Rd, Los Angeles (Echo Park). The family's grocery store is nearby, at 1234 Bellevue Ave, Los Angeles.

The Fast and the Furious 2: South Florida, USA. Key locations include the city of Miami, Biscayne Boulevard, the Coral Gables area, Miami Beach, and the Florida Keys.

The Fast and Furious 3: is primarily set in Tokyo, Japan. However, due to budget and permit issues, most of the film was actually shot in Los Angeles and Southern California, using sets, Japanese signage, and special effects.

The Fast and Furious 4: Los Angeles (California) and the Dominican Republic. The opening scenes of the tanker truck robbery were filmed in Magdalena de Kino, a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) in the state of Sonora, Mexico.

The Fast and Furious 5: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. However, due to logistical limitations, many of the scenes of the favelas, rooftops, and busy streets were recreated and filmed in Puerto Rico.

The film opens at a dock where a shipping container is being loaded onto a truck trailer. The truck pulls away from the dock, and one of the workers calls an anonymous caller, instructing them on how to identify it. After sunset, the truck is traveling along a freeway when three identical black Honda Civic Coupes with green neon lights quickly approach from behind. As they close in, they adopt an aggressive formation: one in front, one to the right, and one to the left. The sunroof of the lead Civic opens, and an assailant wearing a motocross helmet emerges wielding a modified crossbow fitted with a grappling hook.

He fires through the left windshield of the truck, shattering the glass, and then fires a second shot into the passenger seat, securing himself to the vehicle. He jumps from the Civic into the truck and enters the cab, where the truck driver tries to defend himself with a baseball bat. The kidnapper then shoots a tranquilizer dart into the driver's arm, immobilizing him and taking control of the truck.

The next day, Brian O'Conner is in the Dodger Stadium parking lot testing his Mitsubishi Eclipse. He manages to complete a quarter mile, reaching a top speed of 140 mph, but nearly loses control of the vehicle. Frustrated, he leaves the stadium. After the test, he visits Toretto's Market & Cafe in his work truck, a Ford F-150 SVT Lightning, sits at the counter, and orders a tuna sandwich.

Brian O'Connor, now a disgraced cop, is on the run for letting Dominic Toretto escape. He arrives in Miami to start a new life. There, he makes new friends: Tej Parker, a former street racer; Jimmy, a renowned car tuner; and Suki, another street racer. O'Connor is now known by his street nickname, "Bullitt," and competes with other street racers in high-stakes races to earn money, using the skills he learned as a member of Toretto's now-disbanded crew.

One night after winning a race, he is apprehended by U.S. Customs agents after his car is disabled by a fictional harpoon-shaped Electronic Disruption Device deployed by Customs Agent Markham. He is arrested and brought before Special Agent Bilkins, who offers him a deal: if he agrees to participate in a mission, his criminal record will be expunged. O'Connor is required to team up with another officer, but he requests to be paired with someone else.

O'Connor and Bilkins travel to Barstow, California, where O'Connor pitches the deal to his childhood friend and ex-convict, Roman Pearce. Their mission is to work undercover as street racers for an Argentine-South American drug trafficker, Carter Verone, with the help of Monica Fuentes, an undercover U.S. Customs agent who has become romantically involved with Verone. Verone organizes a high-stakes "audition" race in which participants must retrieve a package from his impounded Ferrari at a dock. Pearce and O'Connor arrive first and seize the package. However, Markham interrupts them upon arriving at the location, alerted by their cars' GPS, believing they are trying to flee, which causes the other racers to quickly retreat. Pearce shoots Markham and disables his vehicle despite O'Connor's warning, and the two escape.

Sean Boswell, a young man with a talent for automotive mechanics, has had a troubled life. His mother, who raised him alone, has had to move with him to different cities each time his problems at school or with the local authorities worsened. One day, Sean ends up flirting with the school quarterback's girlfriend, which leads to a baseball being thrown through the back window of his car just as Sean tries to avoid a confrontation after insulting him. After the damage to his car, Sean gets out and pulls out a wrench, threatening to fight. Fortunately, the two decide to duel over the girlfriend: Cindy with the quarterback at the wheel of a Dodge Viper, and Sean in his 1971 Monte Carlo.

The race ends badly when Sean crashes into houses under construction, and the quarterback ends up crashing his car. Both end up at the police station, injured. Sean's girlfriend is furious with them, and the incident nearly lands Sean in jail. To avoid another move, his mother sends him to Tokyo to live with his father, a U.S. Navy officer stationed in Japan. Upon arriving in Tokyo, Sean's father warns him not to participate in any more races or he will be sent back to the United States to prison.

Five years after escaping Los Angeles, Dominic Toretto and his new crew (Letty, Tego Leo, Rico Santos, Cara Mirtha, and Han Seoul-Oh) are hijacking tanker trucks in the Dominican Republic. Dominic begins to suspect the police are closing in. After being informed that one of his garages has been raided, he disbands the crew. Everyone except Letty goes their separate ways. Dominic, knowing he must move on, packs his things in the middle of the night and leaves Letty behind to protect her from the police.

Three months later, Dominic is living in Panama City. There, he receives a call from his sister, Mia Toretto, who informs him that Letty has been killed in a car accident. Heartbroken, Dominic drives back to Los Angeles in his 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS and watches Letty's funeral from a distance. Later, he meets with Mia, who takes him to the location where Letty was killed. He examines the crash scene and finds traces of nitromethane on the ground. Dominic goes to the only mechanic who sells nitromethane and convinces him to give him information about David Park, the man who ordered the fuel. The mechanic tells Dominic that the only car that uses nitromethane is a green 1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport.

Meanwhile, FBI agent Brian O'Connor is trying to track down a drug kingpin named Arturo Braga. His search leads him to David Park, whom he locates thanks to a record of illegal modifications to his car. Dominic arrives at Park's apartment first and dangles him by his ankles, dangling him out the window before letting him go. Brian, who was on his way to Park's apartment, rescues him, and Park becomes the FBI's newest informant.

Park convinces Brian to participate in a street race through Los Angeles. Brian chooses a modified Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 from the impound lot. Dominic also shows up to compete with his modified Chevelle. Gisele Yashar.

After freeing Dominic Toretto from the prison bus that would take him to prison to serve his life sentence for his crimes, Brian O'Conner and the rest of the team flee the country as fugitives from justice.

Weeks later, Brian and Mia arrive in Rio de Janeiro. They head to the city's favelas, reaching a territory where gang members try to stop them. They discover that their leader is Vince, Dom and Mia's childhood friend. In Brazil, Vince has a wife and child. He assures them that Dom was in Ecuador a few weeks ago, and Mia reveals that she is pregnant. Vince then offers them a small job: recovering some vehicles seized on a train.

The next day, Brian and Mia infiltrate the train to secure the mission. A few seconds later, a truck customized for the job arrives, carrying Zizi, some gang members, Vince, and Dominic. Vince takes one of the vehicles and heads to the rendezvous point. Zizi tries to take another vehicle, but Dom takes it from him and gives it to Mia. Dom then tells Mia to go to a safe location, which angers Zizi and leads to a fight that ends with three DEA agents and three gang members dead. Dom and Brian manage to escape by jumping into a river with one of the three vehicles, but they are captured and kidnapped by the mafia. They are chained by their hands in a garage, where their boss, Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), interrogates them.

Following their successful heist in Rio, Dominic Toretto and his team of professional criminals have retired around the world: Dominic Toretto lives with Elena Neves; his sister Mia Toretto lives with Brian O'Conner and their son, Jack; Gisele Yashar and Han Seoul-Oh have moved to Hong Kong; and Roman Pearce and Tej Parker live in luxury.

Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs and his partner Riley investigate the destruction of a Russian military convoy by former British Special Forces soldier Owen Shaw and his team. Hobbs tracks down Toretto and persuades him to help take down Shaw after showing him a recent photo of Letty Ortiz, Toretto's ex-girlfriend, whom he believed to be dead. Toretto assembles his team, and they accept the mission in exchange for full amnesty for their past crimes, allowing them to return to the United States; Mia and Elena stay behind with Jack.

One of Shaw's henchmen leads the team to Shaw's hideout, but it's revealed to be a trap meant to distract the team and the police while Shaw's crew carries out a heist elsewhere. Shaw flees in a car, detonating his hideout behind him and incapacitating most of the police, leaving Dominic, Brian, Tej, Han, Gisele, Hobbs, and Riley to pursue him. Letty arrives to help Shaw and shoots Dominic without hesitation before escaping. Back at their headquarters, Hobbs tells Dominic's crew that Shaw is stealing components to create a Nightshade device that can disable power across an entire region; he intends to sell it to the highest bidder. Meanwhile, Shaw's investigation into the opposing crew reveals Letty's connection to Dominic, but it's revealed that she's suffering from amnesia.

In a London hospital, Deckard Shaw visits his brother Owen, who is recovering from his encounter with Dominic Toretto and his crew. Reminiscing about their youth, Deckard promises his brother he'll make things right. He threatens the medical staff, vowing to harm them if anything goes wrong with his brother. He leaves the hospital in ruins, leaving a trail of dead soldiers in his wake, after having ravaged it during his robbery.

In the California desert, Dominic tries to help Letty Ortiz, who suffers from amnesia, recover her memory by taking her to Race Wars 2014, his "invention." When Letty wins a race against an inexperienced competitor, she recalls fragments of her past. She punches Hector (the Race Wars organizer and a friend of Dom and Letty) and leaves.

When Dominic finds her, she's standing by her grave. She laments not being able to remember the last fifteen years of her life. She tells Dom that the way he looks at her makes her uncomfortable and that she can't remember him or reciprocate his feelings. When Dominic tries to destroy the headstone of her empty grave, she stops him and tells him she needs to leave him to find herself.

Meanwhile, Brian O'Conner is adapting to the "slow" routines and drives a van to take his son Jack to school.

Dominic Toretto and Letty Ortiz are enjoying their honeymoon in Havana when Dom is challenged to a street race at a car show by Fernando, a local racer who owes Dom's cousin money for a car. Dom races Fernando's car, intending to give it to his cousin, while betting his own show car. Dom drives his cousin's car, equipped with Cuban nitrous oxide. During the race, the car's engine and turbocharger begin to overheat, glowing red hot. One of Fernando's thugs manages to position his motorcycle in the race's path and crashes into Dom's car, damaging the engine and causing it to slow down. Dom rips the throttle cable, sending the car hurtling forward and causing the engine to overheat even further. The heat from the turbocharger causes fuel to leak onto the engine and ignite. The engine fire shatters the windshield, Dom flips the car over, and throws it backward. Despite his efforts with the old car, he wins the race. Dom allows Fernando to keep his car, thus earning his respect, and gives his cousin his show car instead. The next day, Dom is approached by the elusive cyberterrorist Cipher, who forces him to work for her.

Shortly after the encounter, Dom and his team—Letty, Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, and Ramsey—are recruited by Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs to help him retrieve an EMP device from a military outpost in Berlin. During the getaway, Dom goes rogue, forcing Hobbs off the road and stealing the device on behalf of Cipher. Hobbs is arrested by German police and imprisoned in the same high-security prison where he helped imprison Deckard Shaw. After escaping, they are rescued from prison by intelligence agent "Mr. Nobody" and his protégé, "Little Nobody."

Currently retired, Dom lives a secluded life, trying to raise his son Brian and be a good husband to his wife, Letty. Their peace is shattered when Roman, Tej, and Ramsey—whom Dom and Letty believed to be thieves—arrive with news that Mr. Nobody has captured Cipher. However, their plane is attacked during the operation, and Letty is rescued by a rogue agent. The plane crashes in the Montequinto region of Central America. The team doesn't have much time to find Mr. Nobody or at least what he was carrying on the plane, but Dom refuses to join, wanting a quiet life now that he has a son. Letty joins, telling Dom that they can't abandon everyone now that Brian is in their lives; that's not in his nature. Dom plays back the distress signal Mr. Nobody sent and realizes that his brother Jakob is behind the hijacking of Nobody's plane and Cipher's escape. With this new information, he joins the extraction team.

While searching Mr. Nobody's crashed plane, Dominic Toretto's team finds part of a device called Aries, a machine so powerful it could hack any computer weapons system in the world (anything that runs on code). Just as the team finds the first half of the device, they are intercepted by a private army and Jakob himself, who steals the device and escapes. The team then reunites with Michael Stasiak on a plane bound for his hideout, where Dom and Letty brief them on who they're up against this time.

One night, they receive a visit from Cipher, who is injured after Dante offered her an alliance. When Dante realized they had different interests, he turned Cipher's team against her by revealing that he was holding members of her family hostage. Cipher's team attacked her, but she managed to fight back, evade them, and escape to warn Dom and Letty about the impending war. Dom and Letty call Little Nobody, who arrests Cipher and checks her story; however, he reveals that the Agency has no business in Rome, and Dom and Letty realize it was a trap set by Dante.

In Rome, Dante locks the team inside a truck carrying a large explosive ball and begins triggering multiple explosions, which are blamed on the team. While Ramsey, Roman, Tej, and Han flee underground, Letty is arrested after trying to pursue Dante, and Dom manages to push the bomb into the Tiber River to lessen its effects, though it still causes considerable damage in Rome. Agent Aimes, the new head of the Agency following Mr. Nobody's disappearance, believes Dom and his team are responsible for the attack and launches a manhunt, offering a multimillion-dollar reward. The team is declared terrorists, and Letty is taken to a secret prison while Roman and the others flee to London. As Dom reflects on the damage his team caused, he is visited by Magdalene Shaw, who comforts him. He asks her to deliver a message to Mr. Nobody, but she is unable to do so.
