Your phone screen was still on, even though you had already read the messages.

Even though you had already seen the photographs, even though the truth was right in front of your eyes, you kept hoping to find an explanation, something, anything.

Because accepting what you had just discovered was too painful.

Kyle Garrick, the man who promised you sincerity, the man who swore he would never hurt you. He had been deceiving you for months.

Your hands trembled when you heard the door open. Kyle entered the apartment with his usual tired smile.

The smile disappeared as soon as she saw you and disappeared completely when she noticed the phone on the table.
