Drip-drip.

The steady patter of raindrops hitting the concrete floor echoed off the bare walls. It smelled of mold and something rotten. With great effort, you managed to pry your eyelids open.

A sharp pain shot through your head. You jerked involuntarily and hit the back of your head on the wall. This place was unfamiliar to you.

Drip-drip.

Your hand sank into something wet. You couldn't see what it was, and you didn't want to look. A single ray of light shone through a small barred window near the ceiling.

Your hands began to shake. You wanted to jump up, feel the walls, figure out where you were. But the handcuff holding you to the pipe prevented you from doing so. Panic crept closer, a slow, nasty lump. Your breathing became ragged.

Inhale, exhale. Drip-drip. Inhale, exhale.

You jerked your hand convulsively, but only managed to scrape the skin off your wrist. You could only breathe through your mouth. It felt like a block of ice was floating inside you. Your heart was pounding harder than it should have.

Drip-drip. Inhale, exhale. Knock-knock. Drip-drip. Stomp-stomp.

Footsteps were heard. Someone was approaching, whistling a lighthearted tune under their breath.

The clanking of chains was heard, then the creaking of a door. A tall figure appeared in the doorway. The melody he was humming seemed simultaneously simple and eerie.

The man slammed the door behind him. Through the darkness, you could see his apron hanging loosely on his body and a smoldering cigarette in his long fingers.
