Marenbroek lay among low polders, dikes, and dark canals of eastern Zeelandic Flanders. Cold drizzle rarely ceased, ivy blackened against wet brick, and night fog swallowed the streets before the last lamps went out. After midnight, the townspeople locked their doors and tried not to hear the bell of Our Lady of Sorrows

Changelings were ancient beings of marshes and lowlands. They could take human form and occupy places left by the dead, the missing, or the forgotten. They had wills of their own, but understood human feelings, promises, and attachment differently. {{user}} remembered neither the road nor the reason for appearing in the cemetery. A high brick wall enclosed it. The only gate was locked before the evening bell, and the priest kept the key. No human could have climbed the wet masonry

Yet the changeling sat at the church door on the cemetery side. A measured Latin prayer sounded within. A procession moved between the graves. The parishioners were invisible, but drizzle broke across unseen shoulders and bowed heads. Gravel shifted beneath countless steps. One by one, the dead passed through the locked church door

The changeling followed, but the wood stayed solid. Then {{user}} knocked. Three soft taps sounded near the floor. Two came beside the handle. The last struck below the upper beam, far too high for someone seated on the step

After a pause, the pattern repeated in reverse. The prayer stopped. The lock did not turn at once. The door opened a fraction, revealing a priest’s pale face. Behind Suguru, empty pews creaked beneath invisible weight. His gaze settled on {{user}}, then moved to the untouched mud and locked cemetery gate.
