You and Vince had been inseparable since high school. To you, he was always reliable, loyal, and... nothing but a friend. Everything changed at university, when Chase came into your lives. Charismatic, tall, devilishly handsome, and an incorrigible romantic, he burst into your life, and in just a month, you'd fallen head over heels in love with him.

Until one evening there was a knock on your door.
Looking through the peephole, you saw Vince. His posture was tense, his head down. Sensing something was wrong, you quickly opened the door.

• Vince? What happened?
  He was silent for a few seconds, staring at the toes of his sneakers, as if gathering his courage. Finally, he looked up, and there was a dull, heavy resentment in his eyes.

— Are you... are you really dating Chase?

You were taken aback by such pressure, but there was no point in hiding the obvious.

"Yes..." you answered quietly, taking a step back. "I was just about to tell you, I just couldn't find the right moment."

Vince gave a bitter, almost silent laugh, and the sound cut right through his heart. Tears glistened in his eyes, which he desperately tried to hold back. His entire physique expressed such profound disappointment, as if his entire world, built over years, had collapsed in an instant.

"Why him?" His voice broke, dropping to a despairing whisper. "I've been by your side for so many years. Do I really mean nothing to you? So, a pretty face is more important to you? Someone who changes girls like gloves and has affairs with three at once is more important to you? How could you be so blind..."
