Kalel loved to taunt Adrian's refined, "angelic" appearance. Looking at his silver hair and amethyst eyes, he would say, "With a face like that, you should be reciting poetry to the ladies at balls, Walden, not hanging around garrisons with me. Get out of my sight before I send you back to your mother." He tried to push Adrian away from the dangerous court intrigues, foolishly hoping that if he was rude enough, the knight would ask for a transfer to safety.

Orders that resemble mockery

When Kalel truly wanted to take care of Hadrian, it looked like an elaborate punishment. For example, noticing that Hadrian was pale from exhaustion after a night on duty, the emperor would throw a stack of tedious tax reports at him and rudely order, "You look like a walking corpse and you're ruining my appetite. Get out of the hall. Lock yourself in the guardroom and don't dare come out until you've sorted through these papers. I don't want to see you again until morning." Stage 1: Solitude at the Summit and the Silent Shadow
After the coronation of 24-year-old Kalel, the faction of the Dowager Empress Regina begins to strangle him with isolation. They spread rumors of his "madness" and tyranny, causing neutral lords to turn against him. On Regina's orders, a first, experimental assassination attempt is made on Kalel during a hunt—he is saved by Hadrian, simply doing his duty. Kalel, seeing Hadrian as nothing more than a knight forced upon him by his father, showers him with cold reproaches. Hadrian withdraws. A wall of mistrust and silence grows between them.

Stage 2: The Diplomatic Trap and the Bridal Ball
Regina initiates a large-scale "Ball of Brides," forcing Kalel to choose a wife for the sake of procreation. Lady Aveline and Lady Claudia arrive in the capital. Kalel publicly shows cold favoritism toward Aveline (in order to secure the Northern army), enraging Regina. To disrupt this alliance, the conspirators stage a provocation: they stage a Northern attack on the capital's guards. Cedric of Valois, believing the cold facts, advises breaking off the engagement. Kalel relents and, left without Northern support, is forced to draw Claudia closer to him.

Step 3: Clipping the Wings
The conspirators realize that the Walden family (Adrian's family) is the main military threat. Lord Christian secretly hires a mercenary cult to attack the eastern borders. Adrian's father and older brother, Reynard, leave for war. The Oliver Hall estate is left undefended. One dark night, a mercenary detachment burns the estate. Celestia and little Leo perish in the fire. Upon learning of this, Reynard abandons the army and rushes back, making a tactical error that causes the eastern front to collapse. The Walden family is declared "incompetent" and stripped of their influence. Adrian, at the palace, finds himself completely cut off from the family's resources.

Stage 4: Bloody Endgame
Weakened and plagued by paranoia, Kalel trusts only Clodia, who acts as his sole consolation. The day of the coronation anniversary celebration arrives. Magic does exist in this world, but it doesn't feature the usual wizards in robes, spells from books, or fireballs. Magic here is purely natural, elemental, and sacred. • The Duke's House of Walden (Amethyst Oserk and Ether): The House of Hadrian is linked to rare natural magic of the senses and space. Hadrian possesses heightened "etheric vision"—he can see fluctuations in other people's energy, their intentions, hidden traps, and even traces of poison. In battle, this gives him phenomenal reaction speed, as if the world around him slows down.

2. Natural Anomalies and Artifacts

Instead of spells, people use what the earth itself provides:

Elemental Stones: Special minerals mined in deep mines. For example, "cold crystals" are used for cooling, while "fire tears" are used for heating or creating explosive traps (these are the ones the conspirators plan to use during the coup). Plant Essences: All dark magic in this world is reduced to alchemy and poisons. Lady Claudia doesn't use spells—she uses the rare juice of "moon aconite," which blocks a person's inner natural energy (it is with this poison that she paralyzes Kalel's flame in the original story).

3. The absence of magicians in the usual sense

To save Adrian from madness, the magic blocked the traumatic memories of his real past life, distributing the colossal amount of information in the most psychically safe form possible—the plot of a "fantasy novel read before death."

Illusion of another body

That's why Adrian sincerely believes he's an ordinary guy from modern reality who simply "took the place" of a noble knight. This illusion is a mental shield for his mind. The weak and suspicious emperor believed the leading evidence and exiled his son to a remote border garrison in the north. The conspirators rejoiced, thinking they had rid themselves of the prince, but exile actually benefited Kalel. There, among the stern soldiers, he earned the army's respect, learned to command men, and personally participated in skirmishes with mountain tribes, returning to the capital a year and a half later as a seasoned commander.

3. Finding the "Brain" (Kalel is 18 years old)

Returning from exile, Kalel began secretly building his own network of informants, realizing that muscle alone was not enough. It was that year that he bought the ambitious and cynical Cedric of Valois (then 23 years old) out of the ministry, seeing in his composure the ideal weapon against his stepmother's intrigues. They made a pact: Cedric would clear Kalel's path to the throne through the law and incriminating evidence, and Kalel, upon becoming emperor, would grant Cedric the power to reform the corrupt judiciary.

4. Historic duel (Kalel is 20 years old)

That same Royal Sword Tournament that Adrian remembers as his "first encounter." For Kalel, the tournament was a show of strength: he wanted to show his stepmother and her supporters that his "Golden Flame" could crush anyone. He crushed opponents one after another until 18-year-old Adrian von Walden entered the arena. The draw in this duel didn't anger Kalel—it shocked him. For the first time in years of isolation, he met a peer who didn't try to poison him, didn't fawn, and wasn't afraid of his magic. By making Adrian his personal knight, Kalel subconsciously found his only reliable support, although due to lingering paranoia, he never brought himself to open up to him in the original story.

It would be a classic and very touching trope of "The Gloomy Prince and His Faithful Sun," where a childhood friendship gradually develops into absolute affection, hidden under the guise of habitual grumbling.

When Kalel was exiled at the age of 17 to a harsh northern garrison, Hadrian, despite the protests of his father, the Duke, flatly refused to remain in the capital. He followed the prince as a common squire.
There, in the tents, under the piercing wind, they finally bonded. Adrian stitched up Kalel's wounds after skirmishes, and Kalel made sure Adrian didn't freeze to death, covering him with his traveling cloak and grumbling, "Walden, if you catch a fever, I'll shoot you myself so we don't have to bother." In training, their elements—Kalel's Golden Flame and Adrian's Ether—learned to complement each other perfectly. They became a devastating duo: Kalel was his punishing sword, and Adrian his flawless shield and eyes.

3. What would their relationship be like at present (24 and 22 years old)?

The adult Kalel, having become emperor, would still hide his feelings behind sarcasm, but now it would be much more possessive and a result of long-standing habit:

*"Family" communication without masks in private: In the presence of the court, Kalel would still roll his eyes at the sight of the knight and mutter, "You again, Walden." But the moment the study doors slammed, the tyrant's mask would fall away. Kalel could unceremoniously rest his head on Hadrian's shoulder out of fatigue or, grumbling about his "disheveled appearance," personally tie his silver hair with the royal ribbon.

• Absolute understanding at a glance: Hadrian wouldn't need to use magic to understand the emperor. One fleeting glance from Kalel's golden eyes—and Hadrian already knows that the wine in the goblet is poisoned or that the man standing before them is lying.
  *Obsession with Hadrian's safety: Kalel, accustomed to having Hadrian always by his side, would be terrified of losing him. If Hadrian were wounded in battle, the Emperor would fly into an icy rage capable of consuming the guilty utterly, and afterwards, he would personally tend to the knight's wound, angrily whispering, "You're an idiot, Walden. If you expose yourself to attack again, I'll lock you in your chambers and chain you to your bed."
• The tragedy of the original plot in this version: If they had grown up together, the ending of the "original" would have been a hundred times more terrifying. Kalel allowed Clodia to poison him only because the conspirators had previously tricked Hadrian into leaving the Emperor.
