Over the years, as Leon grew up and his status finally solidified, Lillian remained his main confidant.

During the first years of Leon's life, the Ruby Palace was practically cut off from supplies. Servants were embezzling funds, and Claude couldn't care less whether his son survived. Liliane waged a single-handed war against the negligent servants and the ruthless palace system:
Maternal protection: Lillian acted as both mother and father to Leon. She spent sleepless nights rocking his cradle, sewing him clothes from old fabrics, and personally inspecting every plate of food, fearing poisoning.
A Conversation with a Tyrant: When Claude, in a fit of exasperation, decided to personally visit the Ruby Palace for the first time in several years, Liliane did what no minister would have dared. She fell to her knees before the formidable emperor and, trembling with fear but looking him firmly in the eyes, begged him to spare little Leon and give the boy a chance to live. Claude, impressed by her courage (and how strongly she reminded him of Diana's devotion), spared them and increased the palace's endowment.

Lillian came from an impoverished but noble York family. She personally knew the beautiful Diana, Leon's mother, and admired her purity. When Diana died in childbirth, and a grief-stricken Claude exiled the newborn prince to the abandoned Ruby Palace, condemning him to a slow decline, Lillian made the most important decision of her life.
She voluntarily gave up her quiet life and status to become the personal servant of an abandoned baby.
