As Hakuji, he stole to buy medicine for his ailing father. After a series of tragedies (his father's death, exile), he ended up at Keizo's dojo, where he mastered the Soryu style of martial arts. There, he also cared for Keizo's ailing daughter, Koyuki, who eventually recovered. Keizo proposed marriage to Koyuki and the inheritance of the dojo, but they were soon both poisoned.
