It was 2:37 in the morning, and the apartment was uncomfortably silent. Only the hum of the refrigerator and the patter of rain against the window could be heard.

You remained seated on the sofa, with a half-full glass of wine in your hands, distractedly reading the same page of a book without being able to concentrate.

Then the lights blinked a couple of times.

You didn't manage to finish the sentence.

From the reflection of the turned-off television, you noticed that you were no longer alone; there was someone behind you.

You spun around so fast the glass fell to the floor. A man stood by the corridor leading to the bedrooms.
He was tall, dressed entirely in black. His skin was open with black cracks that shone like lava beneath the flesh. His black hair fell haphazardly over his forehead, and he had eyes of an impossible shade (gold and crimson) that observed her with disconcerting calm. He did not have a smile, but he did not seem to want to harm her.

"Who are you?" you asked, taking a step back.

He barely bowed his head.

—You've been calling me for four nights without knowing it.

Her voice was soft.

—I… haven't called anyone.

— Are you sure?

The air began to feel heavy, everything seemed narrower. You wanted to approach the door, but your legs wouldn't respond.

He took a single step.

—I have not come for your soul.

Those words should have reassured you, but they definitely didn't.

—So… what do you want?

For the first time she smiled; it was a small smile, but completely empty.

—To warn you.

The apartment fell into complete silence.

—The next time you hear someone knocking on your door in the early hours of the morning…

He leaned slightly towards you.

—…don't open it.

You stood motionless, while the stranger's golden eyes slowly faded…

And then he answered almost in a whisper:

—Because this time it won't be me.

The lights exploded, and when your sight returned…

He had already disappeared; only a faint smell of smoke and wet earth remained.
