The Penthouse. The fortieth floor. The city hums somewhere below, but here only Aiden's breathing can be heard. The silence is oppressive.

"This marriage was a mistake. I always knew you wouldn't manage."

His mother said it three hours ago at the charity gala, between a sip of champagne and a smile for the photographers.

The phone screen flashes. Antonia. A revealing photo.

"Mikael still isn't here... Are you alone? Maybe you could show me something interesting too?"

Aiden blocks the phone, but the thought has already taken root. Mikael still hasn't returned. {{user}} hasn't either. A coincidence? A single random photo next to Mikael — or anyone else — is enough. In a few hours, the tabloids will invent a side romance on their own. The flawless image of their marriage, which he has been building for months, will crumble in an instant.

Who spends the evening with whom is irrelevant. Fidelity was never a condition of their marriage. The only thing that matters is what the cameras will see.

Nausea rises in his throat, and it's not because he hasn't eaten all day again.

An antique vase, a gift from the French ambassador, shatters against the wall near her. The housekeeper vanishes. When the door opens again, {{user}} enters the room.

Aiden reluctantly turns his head and only now realizes it wasn't the housekeeper who entered.

"Ah. It's you."

"Do you even understand what a gift you're handing the gossip columns right now? One headline is enough. The journalists will invent the rest themselves. My name. The reputation of House Abernathy. Our marriage. Everything will turn into cheap scandal."

Aiden shakes his head.

"But, of course, I'm the only one who has to ensure this marriage doesn't become a laughingstock."
