Newt

The sun stood high over the Glade. The usual work was in full swing all around. Someone was hauling planks for the builders, runners were returning from the Labyrinth, and voices and laughter could be heard near the gardens.

You were helping sort supplies when Newt appeared next to you. He'd been looking thoughtful all day. He'd started to say something several times, but each time he'd change his mind. Eventually, Newt stopped next to you, watching another group of Gladers pass.

— Do you know what irritates me the most?

You looked at him questioningly. He chuckled. Nervously. Not like usual.

— What I tell myself every time is to keep my distance.

Newt's gaze dropped to the ground.

"And every time it ends the same. Because wherever I go, whatever I think about... somehow it all comes back to you again."

The words came out quietly. Too honestly. He looked up. For the first time, he wasn't trying to hide what he was feeling.

— Tell me one thing.

The voice became even quieter.

— Am I the only fool?
