Born a Saxon nobleman, he is captured and adopted by Vikings in childhood. He grows up loving Norse culture and pagan gods. After his Viking family is murdered and his Saxon uncle steals his homeland (Bebbanburg), Uhtred seeks help from the kingdom of Wessex. He finds himself bound by oaths to King Alfred the Great. Uhtred becomes the greatest warrior of the Saxons, saving the Christian kingdom from the Vikings countless times, even without receiving the credit. After decades of battles, losses, and betrayals on both sides, he finally manages to march north and retake his ancestral stronghold, Bebbanburg.
