Every wolf wanted to leave their mark on the earth, but this was difficult, unlike for the alpha male and female. To continue the line, a wolf had to do something significant to gain permission from the leaders to continue the line and choose a female, which didn't seem to be the case. The leaders, it seems, controlled the chain and recruited enough to keep the pack's numbers from growing too large. Currently, there were only two such wolves with females in the pack. James, a young wolf who, even as a teenager, could single-handedly take down a deer, as Barrio once did. The second, Mark, also a large wolf, killed two intruders on patrol, protecting their territory. These two had already sired offspring, each with four pups from their females.

Arrogant and cheerful, he couldn't help but be commented on. Playful as a puppy, despite the stern façade he maintained in front of the pack, he was like a different person with her. Jealous, but without exaggeration, he simply couldn't stand it when she spent too much time with others while he was around.

Alpha Male. The leader of the pack, he makes key decisions: where to live, when to hunt, and the hierarchical status of each pack member. He is responsible for the entire pack and is the first to fight in the event of danger.
The alpha female (the leader's mate). Usually controls the behavior of females in the pack.
Senior warrior (Beta male). Deputy leader. Organizes hunting and territorial protection. Often a relative of the leader, he can take over the pack in the event of their death.
She-wolves are mothers and caregivers. They care for the puppies and look after the young.
Warriors. The core of the pack consists of adult males and females who have not yet bred. This is a fighting force that defends territory and forages for food.
Fosters. Grown-up young from the previous litter. They are under the pack's care and help raise the younger ones.
Puppies. The last wolf cubs of the litter. They are cared for, fed, and often enjoy the special favor of the leader and his mate.
Disabled. An elderly individual who retains the right to protection and food.

Wolves mate during the rutting season, which occurs in winter and early spring—from January to April, depending on the region. The further north the population, the later mating occurs: for example, in northern Siberia or Alaska, it can occur in March or early April, while in southern regions, it may occur as early as January.

The mating process begins with courtship displays between the male and female. During this time, the dominant pair displays particular closeness: they stay close, groom each other, lick each other's faces, rub noses, and make soft sounds. The male recognizes the female's estrus through pheromones—an important signal for the onset of mating season.

A female's estrus lasts 5-14 days per year, but mating occurs only during a narrow window of ovulation, usually mid-estrus. During the first few days, the female is not yet receptive to mating. When ovulation occurs, the female assumes a mating position, and coupling occurs, which can last from 10 to 30 minutes due to a physiological characteristic called "mating block."

After mating, the female begins preparing a den—usually natural shelters such as rock crevices, badger burrows, or holes dug under tree roots. There, after a 62–65-day pregnancy, she gives birth to 3 to 13 pups (6–7 on average), which are born blind and helpless.

An interesting fact: wolves often form lifelong mates. If one partner dies, the other is left alone and lives a difficult life. In extreme cases, the other manages to survive the departure of their mate and find a new one. In rare cases, the second partner dies of grief.

Confidence without constant aggression. A true leader doesn't need daily displays of strength: his status is already recognized. He is calm and collected, acting deliberately.
Restrained discipline. If one of the young wolves breaks the rules (for example, by eating before the puppies and elders have finished), the alpha may growl, pin them to the ground, or knock them down—not out of cruelty, but as a reminder of order.
Caring for the weak. Wolves are highly social animals: during periods of famine, the leader often gives part of the kill to puppies and sick animals, and ensures that no one is left behind during migrations.
Coordination skills. When hunting, the alpha organizes the pack's actions: choosing tactics, giving signals (posture, gaze, short sound), and leading the group. This is not a "commander who only yells," but rather a "conductor" who senses the pack.
Caution and experience. The alpha is usually the most experienced wolf: he knows the territory, the habits of prey, hiding places, and danger zones. Therefore, he is not prone to unnecessary risks.

The alpha wolf is a mature gray male with blue eyes, weighing nearly 130 kg. He is a fairly large representative of his species. His paws are large enough to knock down a young deer with a single swing.

posture and tail: the alpha holds his body confidently, and his tail is raised high (in subordinate wolves it is lowered or tucked);
gaze: the leader has a direct, intense gaze that other wolves often avoid;
Dominance posture: may slightly lean, press, growl, or bite other wolves to remind them of their status - but such displays are usually minimal if the hierarchy is already established.

Organizes the pack's life. He determines hunting times, resting places, and times, and assigns roles to the other wolves.
Protecting territory from outsiders.
Coordination during the hunt. The alpha wolf develops a strategy and distributes the wolves into positions to catch the prey off guard.
