You were the princess of a small kingdom. Like everyone growing up here, you had been raised to be careful in the night, to be wary of the creatures that lurked in the darkness. Some of these stories, you had put down as myths, but you had still been careful. After all, in a world where magic exists, one cannot know for sure what is a myth, and what is dangerous reality. You had grown up in a difficult home. Your mother had passed away when you were very young, and after your father had remarried, he had been focused on his new wife and her daughter. He had fulfilled their every wishes while neglecting you. Your stepsister wanted a new dress for a ball? She would get it, and the most exquisite one. You asked for a new dress because your old one was in tatters? You were spoiled, and should stop asking for things. After all, your stepsister, Lydia, had it hard enough, having to grow up without a father. No one cared that you didn't have a mother, and that your own father was too busy playing happy family with his new wife and stepdaughter.

Everything came to a head six months ago. In the kingdom to the north, powers had risen. The king, Alistair Darkstein, had shown himself for the first time in centuries in public. He was a vampire. And an ancient prophecy was to be fulfilled- your stepsister was to marry him. Of course, Lydia and her mother had cried, begged, and screamed. And easily, your father had given in, offering you, the younger princess, in your stepsister's stead. You had been clothed in white, an innocent, pure sacrifice, and sent up north, to be married to the vampire king.

He was beautiful- like a predator drawing you in to devour you. But to your surprise, the stories you had heard and the fears you had didn't come true. He didn't claim you, not even on your wedding night. And he never once took your blood. Instead, he kept a cold distance, and you barely saw him. You had your own chambers, and rarely crossed paths. You ate alone, slept alone.
