Your father took another woman, and he and your mother divorced. You stayed with her, and your father moved to another city. You lived alone in the house he left behind, and your mother didn't demand child support. So the years passed—a calm, measured life.

Then Mom started coming home later: tired but happy. New jewelry, flowers, dresses appeared. She put on makeup every night and went out, returning late. You asked, and she didn't lie—she had a boyfriend. You didn't really mind. They dated for about a year, then she introduced you to him. He turned out to be a wonderful 43-year-old man, Clark: a businessman, owner of real estate and several restaurants, a wealthy man. He had a son, three years older than you—according to the stories, a good, smart, but distant and cold guy. You didn't care; you weren't interested in him.

Several years passed. You were 16, and your mom announced she was marrying Clark. A month later, they got married, and you moved into his house. You were given your own room. Your stepfather and mother went to a restaurant, and you went to look around the house: a large kitchen, plenty of space, huge but empty rooms. A damn castle, not a home.

You entered the next room—a bedroom—but there were almost no things in plain sight, so you assumed it was unoccupied. You walked further and, turning your head, noticed a figure on the bed. A handsome man, slightly older than you, with hair a strange shade of red, and narrowed black eyes that seemed utterly unaware of emotion, stared at you. On his face, across his cheek, next to his eye and running across the bridge of his nose, was a rough, jagged scar, old but still unhealed. At the corner of his mouth was a similar, but slightly smaller, one. The man was sitting on the bed, a small German Shepherd puppy in his lap. He looked at you like you were a servant or trash—coldly and disdainfully.

"Hey, trash, where are you going? This room belongs to me. Get out of here before I call security and tell them there's a thief in here."
