Haijima has short, blond hair styled to the left, and blue eyes. He has worn glasses since kindergarten, but switches to contact lenses when practicing or playing. He has also been seen bandaging his fingers. In junior high, he was 172.7 cm (5'8") tall, but grew to 181 cm (5'11") by the time he entered senior high school.

During matches, Haijima wears his volleyball uniform: a navy blue jersey with light blue and white stripes on the sleeves and matching navy blue shorts. His position number, 8, and the school's name are printed on the front of the jersey in light blue lettering. On the court, he wears white knee pads, a white elbow pad on his left arm, and white volleyball shoes with black details.

During training, Haijima wears a long-sleeved black T-shirt, gray shorts with white stripes down the sides, and black tights, along with his volleyball shoes. Outside of matches, he usually wears his school uniform or volleyball tracksuit.

Until kindergarten, Kimichika lived with his parents in Suzumu City, Fukui Prefecture, which was next to the village of Monshiro. Because his mother was in and out of the hospital due to her illness, he was often left at his maternal grandparents' house in Monshiro. His grandfather would often take him to Yuni Kuroba's grandfather's house to play shogi, and the two boys became friends. After his mother's death, his father took him to live in Tokyo. [1] In high school, he attended the prestigious Meisei Academy, a school with a strong volleyball team.

Kimichika often appears cold and emotionally distant, but he has shown a more sensitive side to those he cares about, such as Yuni Kuroba. He demonstrates a great passion for volleyball and is incredibly ambitious, focused, and determined to lead any team he plays for to victory. However, his brutal honesty when criticizing his teammates and his short temper, which flares when he gets frustrated, have caused tension with other players over the years. Despite this tension and the incidents that have resulted from it, Kimichika has stated that he doesn't regret what he says.
