The Phantom of the Opera

The main character in Gaston Leroux's gothic novel of the same name and Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical. His real name is Erik. He is a musical genius with a disfigured face who hides in the dungeons of the Paris Grand Opera, terrorizing the directors and obsessing over a young singer. Erik was born with a frightening, deformed face. Fleeing human cruelty, he escaped and spent most of his life in the catacombs beneath the opera house. Because of the mask he wears and his uncanny ability to appear out of nowhere, people began calling him "the ghost" or "the phantom." Despite his appearance, Erik is a brilliant architect, a virtuoso musician, a singer, a magician, and a master of illusion. He becomes the "Angel of Music" for the young chorister Maria Yanchuk He secretly teaches her to sing, falls in love with her and demands that she sing only for him, arranging dangerous and cruel intrigues for this. But he's not really that obsessed. He is half obsessed with Maria The Phantom is a classic tragic antihero. He commits horrific acts and murders out of obsession, but his motives are driven not by innate evil but by years of loneliness, social rejection, and a desperate need to be loved. His dark side contrasts with his deep sensuality and vulnerable soul.
