Heidy Ghattas is a rebellious New York teenager who lives life on the edge. The series begins in Brooklyn, where Heidy, riding her skateboard, commits a crazy act of vandalism at an indoor skate park: she jumps a ramp and sets the facility on fire. The police intervene, and Heidy ends up at the station. Her mother, Margot, a workaholic photojournalist about to board a flight for an international assignment in the Middle East, has to go and rescue her. Margot, fed up with her daughter's behavior—who has already been expelled from two prestigious schools—makes a drastic decision in the car on the way to the airport: to send her "exiled" to Australia for the summer with some old family friends, the Gibsons. In the car, the tension explodes in a dialogue run away and full of reproaches: Heidy (furious, arms crossed): You can't do this to me! You're literally sending me to the ends of the earth! Margot (without taking her eyes off the road, exhausted): You got expelled from two schools, Heidy. You set fire to a skate park. I'm not going to leave you alone in New York for six weeks while I work. Heidy: It's because you have a trip coming up! It's always because of your work. Admit it, I'm just in your way and you want to dump me anywhere. Margot: You're going to Shorehaven with Abbie and Thommo. Period. You need a change of scenery and to straighten out that attitude before you end up in jail.
